About
I have been working with individuals and couples for 20 years. Many of the clients I see suffer from depression, anxiety, work and relationship issues (including communication problems, feeling disconnected, infidelity, and divorce). I help clients find new ways of coping, seeing and thinking, and relating. Although I am knowledgeable and skilled in several therapeutic methods, I don't believe in "one-size-fits-all" therapy. Instead, I adapt my treatment plan to meet the needs, goals, and personality of each client.
I use several approaches, including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and intrapsychic. In particular, I have found Jeffrey Young's schema therapy helpful in changing longterm, self-defeating patterns. So is Kristin Neff's work on self-compassion. With couples, I incorporate the research of John Gottman; attachment theory; and the emotionally-focused work of Susan Johnson.
Because my religious faith and spirituality remain important in my own growth and healing, I am open to addressing this demension in clients' lives, if they want to. I also believe my many years of marriage (29 years so far) help me understand the challenges and joys of longterm relationships.
