Through a mixture of approaches including Gottman Method Couple Therapy, I work with my couples to overcome struggles and learn practical strategies they can implement immediately to improve their relationships.
Is your relationship lacking joy and desire? Maybe you've somehow slipped from lovers to roommates. Maybe you fight constantly about the same old things. Maybe you avoid each other at all costs. Maybe you're not dating each other anymore, let alone having sex regularly. And maybe you're ready for a change. You know your relationship is worth saving, but you've tried everything imaginable to no avail. Relationships are tough.

Often we have parts of ourselves we feel shameful about, reject, or are just not aware of, and this keeps us from fully accepting, liking, and loving ourselves. My clients work towards integrating these parts to live more fully through a combination of traditional and more alternative therapies. I specialize in self-esteem enhancement, shadow work, ADHD, anxiety, and relationships. I'm experienced in burnout resolution, parenting, complex trauma, codependency, multicultural issues, somatic processing, and substance use and addiction recovery. A variety of these issues tend to be experienced at once and are usually very connected.

Often the first question a new client asks is, "Where do I begin?" So much is on your plate; it might feel like it will take forever to tell your life story and what is on your mind. My philosophy is that wherever you start is the right place. I do not follow a set script, write everything down with a pen constantly in hand, or stop the session exactly on the mark. My sessions are about building the relationship and staying relatable so that my clients feel safe to open up and explore their issues. Dialogue will be in conversation format and the client will be in control of the session.

Do you feel alone, disconnected and not understood? Do you ask yourself, ‘When did things change? How did I get here?’ Are you afraid to say anything for fear of another argument? Perhaps your life has been impacted by work, children, betrayal and/or the effects of alcohol and/or drugs. Connection and communication is difficult when a relationship is engulfed in negativity. Imagine how wonderful it would be to feel like yourself again. Happy with yourself, understood and connected in your relationships, sharing the same goals and dreams with your loved ones.

I take a person-centered approach to counseling, while utilizing tools from many other types of therapies. I feel it is important to get to the root of an issue by figuring out where it began, process through it to find healing and acceptance, and then use tools and techniques to make specific changes in thoughts and behaviors. I believe setting goals helps to track progress and can be a great motivator. I see counseling as a holistic process and integrate spiritual, physical, & mental aspects into the process, as you feel comfortable.

Gottman Method Therapists
How does the Gottman method work?
One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.
Is the Gottman method evidence-based?
Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.
How long does the Gottman method take?
The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.
Is the Gottman method effective?
Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
