I view clients as the experts in their own lives, and my goal is to create a warm, empathetic, and supportive partnership. I support people experiencing trauma, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. As someone raised in Uganda, South Sudan, and Kenya, moving to the United States as a young adult, I am interested in supporting people processing cross-cultural transition and bicultural identity, as well as intergenerational, communal trauma and survivor’s guilt. As a queer therapist, I enjoy supporting LGBTQ+ clients as well.

There are many things in life that we cannot control, but wellness lies in how we react to our emotions and the difficult situations we encounter. I work with clients to separate the uncontrollable from the controllable, and provide them with the tools to sit in the discomfort of challenging emotions. I aim to provide a safe space in which clients feel comfortable enough to make changes in their lives for the better. I have worked with clients of all ages, but have the most experience working with neurodivergent trans adolescents struggling with anxiety and mood disorders as well as navigating their gender expression and identity.

My areas of speciality are in working with women in life transitions, with individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, and with individuals experiencing issues around sexuality and relationship functioning.
I believe that we have all had experiences that shape our sense of the world and impact our relationships with others. My approach to therapy involves exploring how past experiences impact the present and helping my clients use those insights to make active and healthy changes around their sense of self and in their relationships.

Mental health can be a taboo topic that can be difficult to explore. You may be new to therapy or be skeptical of the process of beginning therapy. I work from a collaborative background, encouraging clients to be involved in the therapeutic process as well as steer their own journey. In sessions, I work to demystify mental health and answer any questions you may have. As a queer identifying person, I offer gender affirming and celebratory care to multiple marginalized populations as they navigate life transitions, sexuality, depression, anxiety, and other presenting concerns.

I help people who want to better understand themselves, including their personal identities, goals, and values; we are all wonderfully unique, but are often are held back by shame, guilt, and what or who we’ve been taught we “should” be. I support individuals by overcoming blocking beliefs that limit us, so that they can better understand and accept themselves. This affirmation of self can increase self-esteem, help us understand others, and by extension, improve relationships.

"Immediate opening now available to engage in prolong exposure therapy for PTSD related to community and gun violence availability to build insurance for services" Taking the first step can be scary, maybe all you need is a little push towards getting there and someone cheering you on along the way. With change comes challenges but with the right effective tools you can push through adversity and get to a place where you are able to thrive. My goal is to create a space free of judgment where you can be your authentic self.

I specialize in working with teens and adults experiencing issues around anxiety, depression, trauma, sexual identity, relationships, life stage transitions, self-esteem, behavioral issues and more. I recognize the difficulty in changing patterns and behaviors that are no longer serving you and I believe the therapeutic relationship is key in creating desired changes. I place a great deal of importance on examining macro factors that may be impacting behaviors and emotions instead of blaming you for acting or feeling certain ways.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
