I also address co-occurring issues, such as depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, insomnia, substance use disorders (including MAT), and Women’s issues.
In our complex and ever-changing society, you fill countless roles each and every day; individual, spouse, parent, business leader, valued employee, volunteer, and everything in between. Each of these roles can be negatively impacted when mental health struggles are also present... but there is hope! As a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, I have a passion for helping my clients achieve their highest potential.

I take a collaborative approach with my patients. I like to know what my patients’ goals are so I can tailor the treatment to help them achieve their goals as much as possible. Knowing what’s important to my patients helps me know what treatments to recommend or when to suggest a change to the treatment. I find that patients experience the most success if they are open to talking about their treatment options.

“A tree that is unbending is easily broken.” Lao Tzu (Tao Te Ching). One of Aesop’s fables, “The Oak and the Reeds,” reflects this same idea- that a rigid oak will break in a major storm whereas the flexible reeds live on. We cannot avoid life’s storms, yet we can find ways to weather them and perhaps come out the other side a bit stronger. I believe that the key to this is resilience. It is the ability to spring back from adversity. To face the winds of life while also being strong in one’s core and true to one’s value. And after the storm, to stand up straight and tall, unbroken. My goal is to help you build your resilience.

My favorite part of being a psychiatric nurse practitioner is tailoring treatment to each individual’s needs, and watching each person grow and heal. It’s an honor to be a part of someone’s health journey. I enjoy Integrating emotional wellness techniques into a holistic health health perspective, utilizing elements of psychiatric medication management, solution-focused and mindfulness therapies, and personalized recommendations. I work with an amazing group of colleagues at Lavender, an online psychiatry and therapy office, where we believe psychiatric care shouldn't be expensive or impossible to access.

Hi. The mind is very similar to our physical bodies; symptoms develop to let us know that something is amiss. Environments, stress, and trauma influence these symptoms. As our physical bodies seek to heal themselves, so does our minds. Difficulties can be looked at as opportunities for growth. I seek to come alongside and work together to help the healing and growth through therapy and if need be medication. Medication is not sufficient alone. Just as the physical body seeks to heal itself when hurt, so the mind/soul with encouragement can heal.

My practice is oriented towards long-term insight-oriented psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and adults, sometimes including medication management as part of an overall treatment plan. I seek to provide non-critical, empathic, and respectful listening which will enable my patients to feel safe as we explore together the sources of their distress. As a person achieves greater self-understanding, greater self-acceptance and compassion towards oneself becomes possible, and this helps relieve suffering and affords greater personal freedom to become one's authentic self.

I'm passionate about the importance of people having easy access to mental healthcare. Before joining the healthcare field, I taught in low-income and underserved communities. Seeing the impact that a lack of mental healthcare had in these areas drove me to return to school and begin a career focused on providing that much-needed care. In my eyes, treatment can significantly increase the quality of life both mentally as well as physically.

My primary areas of focus include ADHD, anxiety disorders, PTSD and trauma-related disorders, depression, and more. I heavily lean on mindfulness, spirituality, mind-body connection, creativity, and utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, psycho-education, humanistic approach, and solution-focused therapy. Additionally, I use medication management to help my patients. In deciding the best medications, I utilize psychotropic pharmocogenomic testing, a genetic test that shows how your genes may affect medication outcomes.

Sleep or Insomnia Psychiatrists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
