As the owner of Associates in Counseling & Wellness, LLC, I have had extensive experience treating adults and children, couples and families struggling with various mental health and developmental conditions. I have specific training in both cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy, however, I believe completely in meeting the needs of each specific client and therefore utilize eclectic techniques to enhance the strengths of each individual. I believe in the inherent stength that each individual embodies and therefore use therapy as a place to enhance the inner experience of each client from a wholistic perspective.

Methods such as EMDR, DBT, somatic experiencing, internal family systems, and sensorimotor psychotherapy focus on stabalizing your current symptoms by creating safety in your body and buliding an understanding of how present day symptoms have a root in the past.
Trauma impacts us all differently. You may find yourself struggling to find your sense of self, losing your footing in relationships, find difficulty getting through daily activities, feel withdrawn, isolated, anxious or depressed. All of this might happen despite successes or strengths in your life and efforts. Just because it is that way now, it doesn’t mean it has to be or that it will be this way forever. There are a variety of trauma informed practices that we can cater to your unique experiences and goals. Trauma therapy does not have to be a re-exposure to painful memories for you to heal and move on.

The DBT group that I run was the first of it's kind in our area, and the only adolescent group in my area for several years.
Thank you for checking out my profile. I primarily work with adults and adolescents, but occasionally work with children. My focus is on addictions, mood disorders, or personality disorders. Because of the high rate of trauma with addictions and personality disorders, I offer trauma informed care and best practices to all of my clients. For over 10 years I have run an adolescent Dialectic Behavior Therapy ( DBT) group for adolescents and young adults who self harm or have self destructive behaviors. Finally, I offer crisis and health and wellness seminars to local businesses in need.

My passion for treating teens and adults with Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT) comes from years of seeing clients genuinely heal from this incredibly effective approach to treatment and go on to live happy and productive lives more fulfilling than they ever thought possible. Difficulty managing strong emotions can negatively influence every aspect of a person's life from intimate relationships, to one's work environment, and family connections. By utilizing a combination of skills training (in an individual or group format) along with individual DBT sessions, my clients complete treatment armed with the skill-set and knowledge to reach their true potential.

DBT Skills Training Only is a standalone option for those interested in learning DBT skills who do not meet the requirements for the comprehensive program. You may benefit from this option if you are currently seeing a mental health provider and struggle with the following: regulating and expressing emotions, tolerating distress, and maintaining relationships. There are 4 modules reviewed in 24 weeks: mindfulness (present moment awareness), emotion regulation (understanding and changing emotions), distress tolerance (surviving crises and “riding out” intense emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (enhancing communication). DBT Skills Training Only requires weekly attendance.

My approach to your treatment is to use my training and experience with dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT) to help you learn skills to be more present in your life, cope with emotions more effectively, manage distress, and maintain healthy and fulfilling relationships.
The decision to seek treatment is not an easy one because the therapeutic process requires you to share your experiences, emotions and concerns with someone whom you've just met. I'm aware that this is often what makes people hesitant to attend therapy and I am hopeful that my personality as a therapist will help you to feel comfortable enough to participate in sessions with me. I am passionate about my profession as a Licensed Professional Counselor and I'm dedicated to helping adults and young adults find balance in their lives and happiness in their relationships.

My approach to therapy is focused on providing the tools and coping skills needed to manage struggles, build self awareness and enhance insight into the root cause of your internal discomfort. Building insight may involve discussing core beliefs that developed during childhood or within relational experiences and exploring how these impact your current thought patterns and behaviors. Welcome! You are taking a brave step toward healing by coming here. I work with individuals of diverse identities with any amount of desire to understand their true selves. We all experience shades of anxiety and depression, some stronger than others. Some folks want change through learning skills. Others appreciate an accepting, safe space that challenges them while also providing objectivity and empathetic support. Some are still unsure why they're even thinking about starting therapy, and yet still have the willingness to show up. Most of the time, it's a mixture of all 3.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Support Groups

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
