I work with men and women facing both the 'big' and the seemingly common issues of life. 'Big' life changes like a cancer diagnosis or a partner experiencing dementia; 'Life' issues like relationships, grief/ loss, anxiety, anger, depression, persistent feelings of sadness, job difficulties, retirement challenges and more. Those who work with me soon come to appreciate the value of being heard; of being seen and accepted-despite the sharp edges that may appear as we try to protect ourselves from the pain the world sometimes presents us.

I chose to be a therapist because of my personal experience with loss and my deep belief that we need community in this season of life.
My goal in therapy is to create an environment that is safe for you to explore the weight of your world. I strive to be a companion during the perinatal period or in the aftermath of loss by identifying your strengths and finding tools and resources that will work for you. I am here to support you in building a life that honors that tender brokenness- your precious scars- and finding beauty and power in that fragility.

A 10-week therapy group (offered at NO COST) for women who have experienced pregnancy loss at some point in their lives, even if it was years ago. It is never to late to go back and grieve an event that never had a chance to be grieved. This group is open to women who have had a loss anytime during the pregnancy, whether it was an early first trimester loss or a late term loss. The length of a woman's pregnancy does NOT equal the amount of grief she experiences. Please contact Brooke Vanek at 720-227-6125 for details.

Using Stephen Levine’s “A Year to Live” as our guide, we will explore what it means to live each day with compassion and in a mindful, heart-centered way. His book chronicles a year-long experiment preparing for his death. By embracing the same mindset, we'll confront the limits of our time here. There will be opportunities to engage in mindfulness practices and creative experiential activities designed to raise awareness, express feeling and gain insight to re-examine our life priorities. We will use these experiences to consider how to “enter into a new, vibrant relationship with life.”

Life can be a lot to handle sometimes. In the blink of an eye, things can happen that irrevocably change our lives. Events like a cancer diagnosis, the death of a loved one, job loss, a breakup, sexual assault, or even a car accident may leave you with trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief that degrades your health and quality of life. Often, it is many accumulating events that overwhelm us with chronic stress and push us past our current ability to cope. If you are in that place where hope, happiness, and the life you would like to live seems impossible to reach, I can help you learn the skills needed to cope and build resiliency.

This is a time for exploration, of how we've been shaped by our relationship with our fathers, good, bad, present, or even non-existent. For both men and women, whether parents or never having been a parent. Fathering has many ways of impacting us, both obvious and subtle. The objective is to increase our awareness of what fathers have meant for us, how we've been disappointed, and how to heal, forgive if warranted, and grow. This summer class has already completed, reach out for info on future classes. "Group Specialties" go well beyond the three options listed below.

I've experienced divorce, remarriage, loss due to death or dementia.
I think most of us struggle with the same needs: that our lives matter; that we know our life is valuable, that we bring blessings into the world; that we live (and love) toward a calling of purpose; that we have meaningful connections in community; and that we live a life of love. Whether we are trying to overcome or let go of an old story, learn new boundaries, find love, or find our true path, holistic therapy weaves together both a pragmatic tending to the challenges that are here now, and a sacred awareness that we are part of something bigger, more meaningful - even in our suffering - than we could have imagined.

As a loved one or a caregiver of someone who has a life-threatening illness, it's possible that you are feeling anticipatory grief and/or stress that comes from facing this news. Typical emotions experienced at this time can include sorrow, guilt, anxiety, and anger, as well as a heightened awareness of the loss of future dreams, independence, and security. I invite you to "come together" with others who share your experience.

Your mind, body, & spirit are important components of a good life. I work with relationships, abuse, bullying, developing a strong and healthy sense of self, sex & gender, & spirituality. Having had a number of experiences with loss and the survival of the soul, I also do lots of grief and hope work over the passing of beloved animals and people. I find that this helps people with anxiety, especially important in our time. I am fully supportive of various orientations and paths to fulfillment, aware of the roles that class, race, and gender play in our lives. Most of all, I want you to find your true self, not a mask imposed on you.

This is one of my favorite groups. Members are invited to join us once a week as we read, write, and find words that give voice to what has long been silenced or buried. Members report finding comfort, healing, and strength through the tears and laughter rides guided by poetry. Among some of the most touching feedback I received from members in the past, include how poetry replaced their cutting, contributed to their ego-strength, and gave them reason to live.

Courage is the foundation to every client's work. Whether you are making a life decision, addressing your or helping your family member/ love ones' with their psychological struggles, or striving to become who you are and do what truly matters to you... Often times, courage may be disguised as anxiety, fear or painful indecisiveness. Reach a better understanding, through testing or mapping out where you are, and really listen to your symptoms/ guides. Then I encourage you to plant courage through forgiveness and compassion so that you can practice, acceptance, confrontation, working through, and letting go.

As an adult, you are beginning to realize that your childhood wasn’t “just normal”. You got away from total chaos in your family. Or maybe you left the church/religion. Or perhaps you have been rejected by past community for your sexual or gender identity. You thought you could just move on but you can’t. This experience has left you totally destabilized. It feels like anxiety and depression are tag teaming. You don’t know who you are anymore. You feel so alone. All of your friends who didn’t have this experience just don’t get it. At the very least you just want to feel normal but what even is that?

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
