I prioritise a psychodynamic approach to therapy, this means that I place an importance upon the therapeutic relationship and what may be happening, consciously or unconsciously, between us within the consulting room. I assist people to become aware of conflicting, and often unconscious, aspects of themselves which can be a catalyst for self-awareness and change. Our work together would be explorative, we will be curious about your processes and how you make sense of your life experiences; from this we can we then learn to understand how past ways of being disrupt your present day living.

Are you sick of saying yes when you want to say no? Do you want to be able to say ‘no’ without feeling guilty or full of anxiety, and feel comfortable and confident doing it? No wonder you feel anxious and stressed. Being preoccupied with what everyone else thinks and feels makes it hard to switch off and is exhausting! It's also a sign you may be stuck in a cycle of sacrificing your own needs for others. The good news is this can stop. You can retain the positive qualities that make you the kind person you are and make space for the real you! This is where my approach comes in.

Are you feeling isolated or lonely? Are you unsure who you are? Are you seeing the same patterns play out in your relationships? Are you no longer getting enjoyment from things in life? If you have answered yes to any of the questions, then person- centred counselling may be right for you. I am a person centred counsellor working with adults, children, young people and couples. I have worked with clients who have had a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, self esteem difficulties, work related stress, bullying and issues in relation to gender, race and sexuality alongside clients who have experienced childhood trauma.

Are you fed up of feeling like you never fit in? Maybe you're tired of masking your true self through fear of other people's judgements, criticisms or rejection? These are experiences I hear from clients so frequently. I work with people that want to find ways to live more authentically, to be more comfortable in expressing their true selves. I support clients to uncover their natural ways of being, to unmask and find ways to express their true emotions. I have a passion and a wealth of knowledge (professionally and personally) of supporting neurodiverse clients (predominantly, though not exclusively clients with autism and ADHD).

Having negative beliefs about yourself can lower your ability to cope with stress. That might mean you feel overwhelmed and anxious because how you view and feel about yourself can profoundly affect all aspects of your life. Let's talk about what's getting in the way of you being happy and work together on how to move you forward. If you know what you should be eating but just can't seem to do it, I can help. Food can be your best friend and your worst enemy, or even both at the same time! You may not feel okay in your body; we can address that, too.

I have been practicing as a full-time Counsellor since 2002. I have worked in a variety of settings and for a wide variety of clients from young children to couples. I work as a Client Centred therapist helping clients find ways to live a more fulfilling life. Helping clients find out who they are, not who they are trying or feel they ought to be. I do a lot of work with children, students and young adults. I have also, since 2003, done short term EAP work in my private practice for a local housing association.

Self-criticism can feel like it’s on a painful, repeating loop. You might find you are telling yourself that you are not good enough, or boring, ugly or fat. Far from motivating you, it’s my belief that punishing yourself in this way actually limits your choices and actions and keeps you stuck. Quite simply, talking to yourself in a mean way doesn’t get you anywhere. Talking to another person, and opening up about this habit can really help.

I have a wealth of experience and success in working with many life issues such as anxiety, bereavement, grief, loss, depression, family issues, relationships and trauma. Plus, for many years, I've supported people in the work environment, understanding how tough processes such as redundancy, investigations etc, can be. There are many reasons why people come to me for counselling. Do you feel confused, or overwhelmed, exhausted by worry? Perhaps you feel misunderstood, unheard, or fear telling others? Maybe you know what the issue is but can't see your way through.

Hi, my name is Joanna, and thanks for visiting my page. There are times in everyone’s life when we need help, not only with physical ailments, but also with our minds. You may be feeling confused, upset, angry or experiencing a loss of direction; therapy can help unpick all of this. You may be experiencing relationship issues and are not sure how to approach them, or just feel ‘stuck’. We can unknowingly carry traumatic experiences around with us, which can impact upon our mind, body and behaviours. I work at your pace, ensuring you will feel heard, comfortable and safe, and offer respect and unconditional acceptance.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
