I often work with chronic illness, loss and grief & trauma and dissociation.
Are there parts of you that feel unrepresented, hidden, anxious, ashamed, angry, or judged by others? We aren't born feeling this way, have you ever wondered how you got to where you are now? My clients come to me because they trust I can weather the hard places we visit together. We need to be able to talk about the harder things in life, and I would like to offer you the space for this; a space of acceptance, warmth, and goodwill. Let's connect the dots of where you are now, how you got here, and work towards where you'd like to be. Please know that all parts of you are welcome with me. There is hope and there can be healing.

Ideas from psychology can be incredibly powerful in your recovery from ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), long covid, fibromyalgia or burnout.
Are you living with ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), long covid, fibromyalgia or burnout? Are you struggling to recover from these poorly understood, invisible illnesses? Your physical symptoms are real. They aren’t in your head. But also, recovery is possible, and psychology can help! As a Clinical Psychologist who has been recovering from ME/CFS and long covid since 2020, I know first hand how debilitating and isolating these conditions can be. Fatigue is stressful, and stress is fatiguing. We can work together to reverse this vicious cycle. Over time, we can help your body to move into a healing state.

I work with a range of problems including depression, anxiety, trauma, body image problems, visual difference, chronic illness, chronic pain, stress, burnout and life stage problems.
What would life look like if you were flourishing? Sometimes problems can feel overwhelming to the extent that we can’t imagine life without them. Starting therapy can feel both daunting and hopeful, and finding a therapist and approach that you feel comfortable with is key. As a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience helping people in distress, I work both in the NHS and privately, using a Holistic approach to care for the whole-being; mind and body to rebalance and heal.

Our early relationships and environments can often lead us to over identify with and internalise the projections, expectations, and demands of others. Therapy offers a place for you to get to know and become reacquainted with your internal world. Over time, the therapeutic process may not only illuminate your conscious, but your unconscious narratives, to reveal a deeper understanding and connection with a more authentic sense of who you are in the present and how you relate to the world.

I am an experienced therapist working with both couples and individuals. I work with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, bereavement, career issues and relationships. If you are a couple, you may be attending therapy to work through a particular challenge or event, to maintain a relationship that's essentially working well, or to consider ending a relationship kindly and respectfully. Whether you're attending individually or as a couple, at the start of our work, we'll identify what you want to achieve from counselling. Whether your aims are abstract or specific, we can work towards them together.

We all have the right to be our own expression of human. Maybe you struggle with feeling that there’s something ‘wrong’ or ‘different’ about you? Maybe life sometimes feel too difficult to manage? Or you may often feel that you need to hide, change, or control aspects of yourself in the outside world. Life often presents us with unexpected challenges and having someone there to support you can make these challenges feel more manageable. I passionately believe in empowering individuals to find their own answers to the challenges they face. I value diversity, integrity, connection, and the journey of self-discovery.

Do you feel like something needs to change? Although everyone has their own unique reasons for deciding to see a therapist, most people will be driven by a feeling that something in their life needs to change. Maybe you have been struggling with anxiety or depression, or an addiction or addictive behaviour has started to dominate your days? Perhaps you are struggling to let go of a bad experience from your past? Maybe low self-esteem is limiting your potential? Or it could be that you just don’t feel like ‘you’ anymore…. Whatever you are facing, I can help.

Do you feel drained and exhausted but don’t really know why? Do you observe other people around you seemingly effortlessly manage tasks that you seem unable to accomplish? Do you notice repeating patterns in your relationships or at work? Do you feel stuck? Do you feel you never found out who you really are or what you are good at? Do your passions, interests, relationships or jobs change all the time? Do you feel like you will never find out what you really want? Would you like to have more connection with yourself? Across 9 years of psychodynamic therapy practice, I have evolved an approach informed by my concurrent practices as artist and gardener: nurturing, growth and transformation infuse our work together, both informing and cultivating the discovery of where and how we can live in ourselves and the world. The work of therapy resides in a space that we cultivate together - a space where meaning can be made or found - it is a place in the clearing. Here, lives and held views can be encouraged to be found, to be heard, and to potentially transform.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
