There are many reasons why people decide to come to therapy. You might be feeling overwhelmed and anxious or stuck and frustrated and you’d like to get clearer about what is bothering you. Or, perhaps, you know what you want to explore and you’d like some help to address the thoughts, feelings and behaviours you find challenging. It can be both supportive and practical to take some time each week to sift through the complexity of your life and come to understand yourself better. What therapy provides is a space to be really heard, with a deeper and more focused attention than that available in everyday conversations.

Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a space to explore current or past concerns, desires and hopes. You may be wanting to get to grips with an aspect of yourself that keeps tripping you up or is holding you back in some way. You may be struggling with current losses, relationship difficulties, adversity, or have a sense of longing that you cannot make sense of. You may have experienced a sense of low self-esteem/ self-worth due to early experiences of being misunderstood or unaccepted for who you are or have experienced neglectful parenting or trauma or simply need a space in your life to figure something out.

Hi, I'm Kristin. I have been a counsellor for over fifteen years, and have been blessed and trusted with countless stories of the human experience. I consider it an honour and a privilege to help others purposefully and consciously connect with their own power. We all, at times, need support and guidance as we become aware of what we need to heal and attempt to navigate life’s challenges with authenticity and grace. It takes courage and vulnerability to ask for help; and sometimes it takes patience and commitment to find the right help. If you are curious to find out how I can help you…let’s chat.

You may or may not know in advance what the source of your difficulties may be. Part of our process is to explore together what has led you here. Every person is different. Amid the stresses of daily life, it’s easy to lose touch with our own deepest needs and feelings – until they become too painful or persistent to ignore.

I believe that our mental and emotional health is intimately connected with how we feel about ourselves, and how we feel about ourselves is shaped by our life experiences and, importantly, how we have made sense of them. I will work to create a relationship with you in which you can feel safe enough to talk about difficult or painful experiences, thoughts and feelings. I will not judge you, no matter what you need to talk about. My aim is to help you start to connect with and feel differently about yourself. This can lead to greater self-awareness and acceptance.

Speaking with someone for the first time about personal issues or trauma can feel daunting. Sometimes it's important to talk with someone separate from your family and friends, someone who is there solely for you and with you. I provide a space for us to develop the environment where you feel safe and not judged. You may be experiencing trauma or bereavement, the effects of historical issues, or coping with the current pandemic. A lot of people come to therapy because life just feels unmanageable and are struggling with day to day living. The session will be held by me but led by you.

Counselling can be an exciting and challenging journey, dealing with what's happening right now or looking at those important moments from your past. I will support you on this journey to understand yourself better, giving you the potential to grow and develop self-awareness. You and I will look at how you think, feel and behave, which can give you focus on which parts of yourself you want to develop, and which parts you can use to support the work you do. This is very important and useful on the counselling journey. You will have the space and time, to work through and develop your understanding of yourself, to feel more at ease.

Do you often feel there’s a constant inner critic telling you what to do or you find yourself putting others’ needs first or worried how others judge you? Many of us have experienced emotional neglect in the past or may have been bullied and these experiences can create negative beliefs about ourselves that tell us that we are not good enough. I have helped many clients who have struggled with these negative feelings and helped them gain a new sense of self worth and confidence. By working together we can find ways to help you feel better about yourself so you can create the life and the relationships that you deserve.

What type of mental health professional is right for me?
Some of the most common types of mental health providers in BN1 are psychologists, licensed counsellors, therapists, and psychotherapists, all of whom diagnose mental health conditions and provide individualised treatment.

Services offered, education, and credentials vary by type of mental health professional. Each professional in BN1 then may specialise in certain areas, such as depression, marriage counselling, or anxiety. Although many mental health providers are not licensed to prescribe medication, they may coordinate with a provider who can.

Both in-person and online therapy sessions are available from most psychologists.
How to find a specialist?
You can refine your search using the filters on this page. There are several categories you can filter by to find mental health professionals with the experience you are looking for. You may want to filter for CBT Psychologists in BN1, or Child Psychologists in BN1.

Many find it useful to use filters to view only psychologists that have experience working with certain issues, like BN1 psychologists specialising in EMDR.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Psychologists in BN1 specialise in therapeutic approaches such as CBT, EMDR, and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), among others. Finding a psychologist or counsellor who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

Can I afford counselling?
Yes. Most counsellors offer reasonable rates or will work on a sliding scale basis. Many accept health insurance. Feel free to discuss this when you contact the counsellor.
