My main work consists of Couples counselling as well as trauma focused work, which includes childhood trauma. The work involves psycho education around brain fragments, where clients work to assess when they are operating from the frontal lobe and when they switch to the limbic system where they are reliving old trauma memories. Since Covid there has been an increased demand for couples work. A lot of work is around working with couples in troubled relationships. I work with children and young people who have experienced trauma and sexual abuse as well as bereavement support work.

I work with both children and adults and have a keen interest in working with those who have experienced complex/relational trauma with or without self harming/suicidal behaviour. I work with a variety of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. I also work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship and work towards understanding the emotional conflicts, that result in the relationship being strained or likely to end without support. There is no one size fits all therapeutic approach and so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of what the core emotional issues are that impact you.

We all deserve to be truly heard, seen and accepted for who we are. Without judgement, I’m here to support you through the process of therapy. Initially, we’ll work to unpack what has brought you here today. Whether that be feeling overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, feeling stuck in depression or learning to process difficult past experiences. It can be hard to manage these feelings alone. I’m here, to walk alongside you. To sit with you in the difficult moments. To support you in finding a way forward. To help you live a life that feels true to yourself.

Is weight, food or exercise dominating your life? Do you feel like a failure for not being able to take control? You’re not alone. With many conflicting pressures about weight, diet and exercise, it can be difficult to achieve a healthy balance. Short-term solutions may work initially, but if the underlying psychology is ignored, old habits often return. I can help you develop a healthier relationship with exercise, food and your body. Together we can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, to better understand where these come from and help you break out of the negative cycle keeping you stuck.

Hi, I'm Saana. I recognise that as humans we all suffer from distress occasionally. If you are going through a tough time or feel trapped with anything, I can offer you a safe place to explore what might be impacting your life. I work as an integrative therapist, meaning I use more than one counselling approach to inform and enhance our work together. I believe I can apply some of the understanding and insight I've acquired from helping people in both my personal and professional life to my counselling practice. Working with people has given me the confidence to think that even in the most hopeless situations, change is possible.

There is no question life is stressful - but the good news is that help is available. You do not have to struggle alone. We all need a neutral, non-judgmental person to talk things through with. I believe that knowing you are not alone, and having that safe place to express your fears, or uncover how the past influences you today, is essential for mental health.

Teen Counsellors
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
