Hello, I'm Kirsti Willis - an autistic HCPC registered Art Psychotherapist and a member of BAAT. I currently offer neuro affirming counselling/art psychotherapy to ND people. As a neurodivergent person you can often feel overwhelmed with anxiety and worry. This can make you feel isolated, and a low in self-esteem, as well as in mood. You may also be traumatised. However, any situation can be changed with the right support. Together we can work, for example, toward you being happier and functioning better at work and/or in relationships. I also offer relationship counselling (where one or more in the relationship are neurodivergent)

I specialise in trauma and I have significant experience working with depression, anxiety, sexuality and everyday problems.
Sometimes life is difficult and you want something different, a change for yourself. Therapy is a space where we can share our stories, our histories that influence the person we are, the suffering we may experience. Through this process, we can develop new insights into what has shaped us as people. I offer a safe, empathic and confidential space where you can explore, without judgement, your story and any personal difficulties you are experiencing. I will work with you, in your rhythm, to help you deepen your awareness of your experiences, thoughts, and embodied feelings.

From my work and life experience, I keep finding myself using visual art in helping individuals to find more possibilities in their life. I help individuals with general anxiety, especially those who experience life transitions, workplace and education stress, and cultural differences/adjustments. The modern life itself can be overwhelming but there are resources to help us feel better to achieve the goals we have. Visual art therapy is an effective one to express emotions and thoughts with the joint efforts of individuals and therapists.

I offer you a safe space that allows you a moment to put down what you have been carrying. Talking to someone about what you're going through can be intimidating, especially when you feel overwhelmed. Often, we try to push our worries away and do everything we can to feel better on our own. Except when we keep things to ourselves, it can feel like they grow bigger and bigger. Counselling gives you the space to pause, and stop these problems from growing. Looking at our hopes and fears isn't easy, but by working together, I can help you shoulder that burden and find a better understanding of what you're facing.

Children and teenagers can benefit from counselling therapies, and studies show that these are hugely effective, both in the short and long term. For older kids and teens, talking therapy can provide a unique space to safely explore what's going on to make them sad, angry, or anxious. For younger children, using play and art, as well as talking therapy, can help them begin to piece together things that might be difficult for them. Life doesn't always go according to plan, and sometimes things happen that no one is prepared for - an accident, a traumatic experience, a situation no one could have foreseen happening.

Accepting that we're finding things difficult is often the hardest part. Throughout every stage of life we can experience times when things don’t feel right and we struggle with our relationships, or to make sense of our thoughts, feelings and world around us. This can lead to us feeling anxious, overwhelmed and struggling to communicate.

I am a fully qualified Psychodynamic therapist - some of the issues I help clients find resolution with are anxiety, trauma, addiction and relationship problems, amongst other things.
Welcome to my page. Through providing a trusting and honest relationship I can bring insight of the unconscious into awareness. This helps provide the tools to develop a better understanding of how the past impacts the present as well as resolving issues you might have with interpersonal relationships, defences, and emotions. How long we work together is dependent on the issue(s) and your preference as a client but I would look to review how you felt the sessions were going at least every 4 weeks.

My areas of clinical work include anxiety, depression, play therapy, grief, trauma, life transition, and substance use issues.
I am a person-centered counsellor with a background in private practice and independent schools. I believe that healing happens in the context of relationships, and I am dedicated to cultivating a safe and welcoming environment where clients can come as they are and work collaboratively toward their goals. It takes great strength to decide to come to counselling and it has been a joy to witness the healing that happens when clients give themselves space to slow down and process.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
