I practice with a Humanistic and process-based CBT approach, and frequently draw on evidence-based applications of mindfulness and relaxation therapy.
If you're struggling with difficult feelings, unwanted thoughts, or behaviours that aren't healthy, my specialty is helping you make the changes you want in your life. This includes helping people with depression, anxiety, trauma, and sexual health issues. Sometimes people find that they are suffering from more than one of these things at the same time and it can be overwhelming. Ultimately, I strive to be there with you compassionately and help you feel more clear and in control of the issues you bring to session. This includes making realistic goals, understanding complex emotions, and building useful skills for a lifetime.

Helping people navigate life's complexities, reconnect with meaning, and find language for their experiences are passions for Kristi-Anna. She is sincere, down-to-earth, and a careful listener. Trauma, depression, cancer (patients & family members), grief, navigating change, and making sense of the past and present are areas she often works with. She also helps people who are contemplating whether or not to remain in present situations, including relationships, jobs, or educational trajectories, where people can sometimes feel stuck, constricted, or on auto-pilot. Her approach is humanistic, trauma-sensitive, and non-pathologizing.

Some approaches that I often draw from include humanistic theories, EMDR, CBT, attachment-based, strength-based, solution-focused, and play therapy (yes, even adults can play if they want!).
“Life is tough” - reading that phrase might really resonate with you, but it might also seem like the understatement of the year because in fact, life feels impossible and unbearable. Or maybe, you feel that the word “tough” is too strong and life is actually going ok, but there are some rough spots you could use help with. No matter where you are in life, what’s happening, or how challenging you may find it, you deserve to be supported through it and reaching out is a great step. Remember, you are never “too broken” to be helped and your problems are never “too small” to be worth asking for help.

I use a humanistic and eclectic approach to practice, blending therapeutic modalities to fit your needs.
Therapy can often feel overwhelming and scary, which is why I focus on creating a safe and secure foundation within the therapeutic space. I believe that this foundation begins from a relational approach, so I ensure that my practice is grounded in collaboration. I focus sessions on creating a non-judgmental space for you to be unapologetically vulnerable. I will meet you in each session with compassion, empathy, and warmth, and support you in building new coping tools to build on the strengths and skills that you already have.

I am here to offer couples and Individuals my guidance into what we are beyond the psychological structures and past traumas. My educational background, and 22 years of professional experience, draws from various therapeutic traditions and methods such as the cognitive,(CBT), systemic, (IFS), psychodynamic and existential, but it is the deeper and transpersonal perspective and approach that has my heart; It is about growing a loving awareness of yourself, your inner self, and what is beyond the self; to tap into a greater sense of our connectedness with everything, to be at home inside, and to build our life in that.

Whether you want to address past experiences or build a different future for yourself, deciding to go to therapy can be a difficult step. It is important to me that I provide a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental space for you to explore whatever brings you to counselling. People are not “one size fits all” and I use a variety of therapies to meet my clients where they are at and help them achieve their goals. My interests lie in working with adults with a range of concerns including depression, anxiety, infertility, eco-grief, self-compassion, life transitions, relationships, and supporting survivors of trauma and sexual violence.

I work with children, teens, adults and couples facing life transitions, coping problems or mental health concerns. Depression and anxiety is very common, but I also work with loss, health concerns and family problems.Therapy is about change, but it is not about changing who we are. The person we are meant to be has been here all along. Sometimes we need help to reconnect. I work with my clients to explore patterns of behavior and thought that can keep us in small and narrow places, and to reconnect to our wiser, balanced and more joyful self.

I recognize that therapy is not always exciting or enjoyable. In fact, it is often uncomfortable, exhausting and scary. You will not always like it. I also think that it is only through facing the impact of the difficult ‘life stuff’ that you can build a fulfilling and sustainable way of being. I trust that all humans hold intrinsic knowledge of what they need and unforeseen events often disconnect us from that knowledge. I view my role as restoring that connection in an honest and collaborative way. I am drawn to finding crucial links uncovering why we do what we do and creating intentional alternatives together with the client.

Navigating life’s problems is like crossing an untamed wilderness. Unsure how to proceed, we venture on, stumble, and eventually make a way through. With enough time our uncertain trail becomes so well worn that walking it is second nature. Sadly, some worn paths don’t lead to the life we wanted. We feel disconnected from our lives, often irritable, in conflict with loved ones, and slipping into self-destructive habits. Making new paths can be daunting, yet doing so fosters feeling in control of yourself and your life, experiencing more connection in your relationships, and finding enduring answers to seemingly unsolvable problems.

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualisation and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
