People come into therapy, often, because they are in a crisis of some kind - personally or relationally. They are at a cross-roads; they are filled with indecision. They may not know 'where to start' when I ask them what brings them into therapy, but they know that they feel very far away from themselves; they feel very far away from contentment or happiness. Maybe there has been a 'tipping point' that underscores the urgency to look at self-destructive patterns. In the midst of the crisis is also a clarity, a readiness, a yearning for change - for wholeness.

We all have different life stories where losses, pain, struggles and setbacks paint part of our story plots. Our life stories say more than the fact of what happened, they speak to us who we are, who we can be and guide our future as we make sense of our life experiences. When we get stuck in our life, we sometimes need a safe place and a reliable person to hear and to understand us as we work our way out of the dark tunnel. We can feel validated and accompanied in this collaboration that fosters an honest and open dialogue. I do hope to be your companion on your healing journey.

The struggles young people face today, if not addressed, will follow them into adulthood. I equip teens and young adults with the mental and emotional fitness required to identify and remove obstacles interfering with a healthy transition into adulthood. The problem is pain, trauma, and repeated hardship can keep us from accessing our natural potential. By processing our suffering we can summon the hope and courage to choose for ourselves, how we want to live.

It takes a lot to invest in therapy - emotions, time and finance but more importantly it takes a lot of courage. Asking for help is not an easy task but when someone does, they want their therapist to be invested in their wellbeing. I believe in every individual's innate capacity to bring a positive change and improve their feelings of satisfaction and the overall quality of their lives. My goal is to provide them skills and tools that can help them achieve this change. I provide therapy to adult individuals which includes (but not limited to) Veterans, First Responders, and Motor Vehicle Accident clients.

“A different therapy must be constructed for each client because each has a unique story.” – Irvin D. Yalom. I believe everybody’s story deserves to be heard, and we all have the intrinsic capacity to heal and change. Your presenting concern is as unique as your fingerprint influencing thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our connections between yesterday and today are roots to be used as foundations to explore new possibilities, personal growth, wisdom and a deeper appreciation of self and others.

There are times when we feel like we are looking for something. Something is missing in ourselves; in our lives. We feel alone in our problems. We feel like we're not enough. We want to show who we really are but we're afraid. Finding a way through starts with being curious about ourselves; about others; about life. We can feel fully present in our lives when we tune in to our own attachment needs and those of the people we love. Two Psychologists, Brea Malacad and Paul Berg, have created this new private practice in Edmonton emphasizing this need for connection and attachment.

How can I find a therapist in T6E?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
