“Somatics” are the lived experiences of our bodies. In our sessions, you (re)learn how to be comfortable in your own skin so your attention can be redirected toward other purposes. By resetting and expanding your nervous system’s responses, your day-to-day life can feel less overwhelming, and your access to joy, connection, trust, physical energy, and rest increases. Benefits of this approach may include increased felt sense of your healthy boundaries, improved sleep, increased ability to fluctuate between different states of intensity in life without feeling stuck, and ability to attend to your needs first while caring for others.

Becoming a parent, and being flexible and resilient in how you parent your developing child, is one of life's greatest challenges. We are often unprepared, overwhelmed, and not well supported. Working with families with children of all ages, I specialize in helping strengthen the parent-child relationship. I provide tools to foster resilience and wellbeing, whether it be during periods of transition (e.g., prenatal/postpartum periods, transition to school, separation/divorce), or during regular day-to-day parenting. By helping you work through your struggles that arise with your children, you can raise happy, confident children.

I am a trained and skilled counselling hypnotist. By inducing a trance-like state, I help my clients activate the power of their subconscious mind to change behavioural patterns and ways of thinking that don’t serve their goals. With the use of hypnosis, I guide my clients to overcome addictions, phobias, stress, anxiety, panic attacks, and physical pain. Hypnosis has also been successfully used for smoke cessation, building confidence, and can help improve academic and physical performance. Clients report profound shift in energy levels and mental clarity. Most clients start to notice improvement after a couple of sessions.

Would you like to stand in your power, be more in control of your life? To solve a problem, Einstein said you must first change the mindset that created it. It starts “within” you! Having worked with thousands of clients over 17 years, I’ve observed that we have 2 voices in our head - the conscious and subconscious minds. When your 2 voices don't get along, it feels like a battle is raging within, and it’s this gap that causes your anxiety, depression, fears, and emotional struggles; but when your 2 voices align in harmony, you experience inner strength, joy, passion, your TrueSelf, and feel energized in the pursuit of your desires.

Therapists can help individuals, families, and children to understand and help resolve problems of all kinds. We are faced with many challenges. Some are familiar and we have managed to deal with them effectively. At other times the unknown arrives and we need to speak to someone to be able to understand our options and to move on with confidence. At the end we feel more at ease and stronger with the confidence that we did not realize we have. That is where we know that we have made a good decision to consult someone with knowledge about our situation and relating to someone who has the life experience to help us effectively.

**Please note that the best way to reach me is via email either directly from this site or at deborah.schwartzman@mail.mcgill.ca** We all feel sad and anxious at times, but some of us worry excessively about things that are unlikely to happen, feel tense all day long, or feel so unhappy that it becomes impossible to do the things we used to enjoy. My work with individuals is to get to the bottom of the problem and find solutions. I draw on principles of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) to explore how your thoughts, feelings and behaviors interact and affect your ability to cope with challenging situations.

How can I find a therapist in Quebec?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
