A key element in choosing a professional is the level of ease and comfort that exists between you and your therapist. I am flexible, easy to talk to and have great interpersonal skills. My belief is that change management and transformation occur when people make decisions that are strategic and focused. I can assist you in dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, addictions, abuse, poor self-image, family problems and other issues that are stopping you from 'living' your life. What about your children? Are they being bullied? Learning development problems? Exhibiting 'at-risk' behaviours? I can help!

Adversity is one thing that we can come to expect in an increasingly demanding and stressful world. When adversity overwhelms us, it can impact those parts of our lives that are most meaningful. Whether adversity presents as emotion dysregulation, anxiety, depression, grief, interpersonal conflict, addiction, anger or loss; the impact can be devastating, undermining our sense of self and confidence. These issues are at the core of my practice.

I utilize a client-centered integrative approach incorporating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Interpersonal Psychotherapy and mindfulness-based approaches.
Sometimes we feel sadness and worry that we cannot seem to shake. At these times, we feel hopeless and helpless and believe that we have nowhere and no one to turn to. Dealing with these feelings alone can be overwhelming and unbearable. When we find ourselves at this low point, the only way to go is up. I am here to help you to reach that up point, and have a happier life. I am committed to reducing the suffering and distress associated with psychological trauma, anxiety disorders, depression, grief and loss, adjustment difficulties, and self-esteem issues.

I offer couples a new way to understand and relate to each other. We build connection and intimacy through developing new skills for attention, conversation, and emotional awareness. Couples counselling lets me use all of my skills in one place, it’s an important and special experience where I get to help bring people together - or support them in their vision to move apart, if that’s what they need. I am also passionate about helping with stress in the workplace and relationships, anxiety and depression, and/or ADHD. I’ve seen great success supporting “adult children” who are working to heal parental relationships.

I feel there is no one right path for self exploration. Some have that space via reading, spirituality, writing or something else. And for some it can take the form of therapy which is not just problem focused but rather person focused. At times, the motivation for self exploration comes from painful life events occurring outside us or other times it could be the overwhelming emotions building up within us. It can also be difficult to distinguish oneself from one’s difficulties and as a therapist I try to join you in your dialogue, confusion & difficulties. Therapy space is unique for it preserves space for the unspoken words too.

At one time or another in our lives we hit an obstacle, a mountain, and if we're raised to feel freely it maybe wouldn't be as hard to traverse it, to get through it. I hope to be but a Sherpa on your trek, I know the way but you hold the map. Some days it gets hard and desperate, finding a person to explore with, to navigate life with, helps to grow your "life worth living". It's as true today as ever I've said it, but awareness is key, without awareness and acceptance there can be little lasting change.

I believe in relationships. It brings me great joy to be able to work with a couple on the verge of breaking up and to see them move to a healthier and happier place. I also enjoy working with individuals who are feeling unworthy, alone, and confused to find self love, healing, and fulfilling relationships. When I work with a couple my focus is always on the relationship. We’ll work together as a team, not on each other. Through couples therapy you can learn that most issues are common and can be worked through - things like improving communication, handling finances, and navigating conflict.

My own life experiences have led me on this journey. Since I can remember I have always had a heart to see people living the life they were meant to live and witness that potential in those that choose to work with me. I have been led to work in many parts of the world from India, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Malawi and right here in Toronto and the Durham Region directly with underprivileged, homeless or at-risk youth, survivors of human trafficking, people from different developmental stages and life transitions including seniors in long-term care. Sometimes things happen in life and we do not know how to unpack everything ourselves.

Interpersonal Counsellors

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
