My passion is helping people who have sustained relational, attachment, and intergenerational trauma through childhood neglect, and/or sexual, emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse and assaults at any point throughout the lifespan. This trauma often shows up later in life as: intrusive thoughts, emotions, body sensations and flashbacks; an overall experience of sadness, shame, depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness; addictive, avoidant, and compulsive behaviours; and a loss of a sense of Self. It's important to know that there is nothing wrong with you! This is a normal response to terrible things that have happened to you.

You want to feel that your therapist sees you with compassion and understanding. This helps create conditions needed so you can heal from high anxiety, depression, grief, or other impacts of trauma. Family stress, loneliness, abuse, neglect, and dealing with injustices are some of the issues we may face. Events may have overwhelmed you and to cope, you adapted patterns that are no longer wanted. You want to change and live with emotional freedom. If you are numbed out or in fight or flight mode you can learn to regulate your nervous system, process the past, and develop patterns so you can show up the way you want to in your life.

My favourite work is supporting LGBT+ clients explore body image/acceptance, eating disorder recovery, Identity exploration (ADHD,Autism, Gender, Sexuality, Relationship Orientations), Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain, Sex work and Kink (especially in navigating wellbeing and new dynamics). Looking at the above themes from a place of curiosity, encouraging you to find your internal compass and lean into who you are, your wants, desires, and needs by learning to shed the cloak of expectations and embrace future possibility. I do this by centering your experience of the world and bringing approaches that align with who you are.

Accepting new clients! Tess is an empathic, kind, and nonjudgmental counsellor who is passionate about helping individuals overcome their struggles with mental health, and cultivate the self-compassion needed to heal from past traumas. Stress and anxiety, depression, behaviour and relationship difficulties have feelings of shame and self-criticism at their core. Directing compassion toward ourselves can allow us to feel safe and accepted, giving us the caring motivation to work through our suffering, to change unhelpful patterns, connect with our values, and get the most out of our life.

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
