For individuals with prolonged histories of emotional abuse, its common to develop high level skills in self-awareness and self-reflection. Maybe you're aware of your own triggers, where they come from, and your patterns of responses (e.g., people-pleasing, conflict-avoidance, self-criticism, rejection sensitivity). Having this awareness can make it all the more frustrating when we can't change our responses. Its common to feel weak and self-blame. Alternatively, maybe you only suspect you've been exposed to emotional or narcissistic abuse and you need help making sense of the confusion and uncertainty you're experiencing.

I believe that the most worthwhile challenges are those that we encounter within ourselves; ones that we may feel stuck in from time-to-time because they require us to face our greatest fears. Many people seek therapy because they are not sure how to move forward. My goal is to help you find solid ground, and also to discover the sense of freedom, joy, and equanimity that can come with greater self-knowledge and personal growth. I work with adults of all backgrounds on issues related to self-esteem, life transitions, occupational stress and burnout, depression, anxiety and grief.

At our core we all know who we are, what we believe, the kind of relationships we want to have and the kind of life we want to build. Trauma, anxiety, grief, loss and relationship problems can take up so much mental space that it can feel impossible to envision that life. These experiences can be isolating and it may be hard to reach out for help at the times you need it the most. Everyone deserves time and space to be listened to and supported

What do you think when you think of therapy? Are you looking for a therapist who is warm, open, and wants to support you exactly where you are at? When you think of connecting with a therapist, what are some of your hopes? My name is Adrian and I want to provide an open and collaborative space where we can connect about issues you are facing. Things such as grief, depression, anxiety, systemic oppression, not feeling accepted, transitions, and maybe an overall feeling that things are harder than they could be.

As someone who has gone through the journey of immigration, I offer deep empathy and compassion in the therapy room (virtual or otherwise) for clients dealing with the challenges (such as loneliness, melancholy, alienation, loss, culture shock) of this experience.
In therapy, you will explore “what's wrong for you” instead of “what's wrong with you”. There is enormous potential for self-awareness and self-growth with help from a listening, caring, and attuned therapist. I provide Relational Therapy, which holds that there is great potential for healing, growth and change from within a therapeutic relationship. I meet my clients with great respect, as a fellow traveler in the therapeutic journey. My wish is to cultivate a safe space for my clients to experience their emotions and encounter their beliefs about themselves.

I am excited to be running two groups this winter, one for ND adults with the focus of ambiguous grief and one for people who have given birth in the past 9 months or have not yet had the chance to share their birth story.
My goal as a therapist is to provide a relationship with each client that gives space to explore the impact of external stories and your internal worlds. I work mostly with neurodivergent individuals – people who self-identify as Autistic, ADHD, gifted, highly sensitive etc. – with interest in navigating the harmful impact of dominant social norms. My approaches are borrowed from Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Schema Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Mindfulness and Religion, with some influence from CBT and Art Therapy.

Areas of focus include: Trauma, Relationships, Anxiety, Depression, Sexuality, Life Transitions, Self-esteem, Disordered Eating, Existential Issues, and Grief & Loss.
My practice is rooted in the desire to understand the human experience and forge meaningful connections with individuals on their unique paths to healing and self-discovery. Within the therapeutic dynamic, I bring authenticity, compassion, curiosity, and humour, fostering an environment that is safe and non-judgmental. I am not a passive observer and instead believe in collaboration, open communication, and constructive challenge. Both as a client and a clinician, I recognize the importance of embracing discomfort as a catalyst for long-term growth and meaningful change.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
