Having grown up between two cultures, I have blended the characteristics of Western and Eastern psychotherapy modalities and believe we can eliminate the stigma surrounding therapy by openly discussing mental health and educating ourselves. With keen insights and evidence-based practices, I wish to help individuals navigate challenges, cultivate emotional regulation, and foster healthier relationships by helping them recognize the intricate balance between thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

People have come to me when they want to: improve their mental & emotional health, address stressful relationship patterns, receive support during difficult life situations, and want help from a professional in learning about and helping to unpack clouded thoughts and feelings. People who benefit from my work are those who want to better understand the root of their challenges, and who feel making changes are important, but they're needing support in realizing those changes.

I have been providing therapy for many years and I consider it an honour to come along side others (individuals, couples and families) as they seek change and transformation. When you are faced with life's unexpected challenges, distress or overwhelming anxieties, seeking help and consulting with a therapist is a significant step.

I believe that we're at our strongest when we have meaningful, supportive connections in our lives. My focus is on developing these types of connections with my clients - ones where they feel genuinely cared for, safe, and supported in their journey towards feeling more fulfilled in their lives. My aim is always to help my clients feel heard, empowered, and more confident in their ability to navigate struggles. I'm always in their corner, and it's important to me that they feel this way. At the end of the day, feeling like I've provided someone with meaningful and support is why I love this work.

It is my firm belief that everyone deserves someone to talk to, and to pour out what has been long kept in their heart, body, mind, spirit, and soul. It is with that belief, that I offer my skills, and trained ear as a counselor, in order to help you navigate through this situation that you are finding yourself going through. You are never alone. Although it may feel like this at this very moment, you are stronger than you think that you are. Real strength, in my opinion, is being able to be vulnerable, being able to disclose a hidden problem or area of great pain, and to deal with this 'head on', and with someone who can help you.

Accepting new clients! I specialize in working with people with histories of trauma and upsetting childhood experiences. Many present as successful, but they often feel deeply ashamed, unsettled and all around “not good enough”. They may experience traits of perfectionism, resulting in fears about their capacity to perform and manage their emotional well-being. Amid this discomfort, they aren't necessarily seeking to learn coping skills in therapy. They do, however, want to engage in an authentic relationship where they can be vulnerable, undertake deep self-exploration and heal the parts of them that may be hurting.

We live in a continually growing, fast-paced world where it can be hard to accomplish all that we need in a day, let alone finding time to prioritize our mental well-being or relationships. I work with individuals and families who are seeking to understand themselves better and to deepen feelings of safety and connection within their relationships, but may feel stuck or uncertain about where to start. I believe that each person holds the answers within themselves and through our work together, you will uncover and build on your unique inner resources in order to make meaningful changes in your life.

Can you imagine if therapy took place while hiking through the forest, sunbathing in a field of wildflowers, chilling with some chickens, sitting around a campfire or simply from the comfort of your kitchen table? I believe that therapy has a real image problem that could be improved by embracing a healing realm which includes mother nature, play and genuine human connection. If you are considering therapy for you or someone you care about, but the thought of sitting in an office turns you off, then let's connect where you're at, or where I'm at: on 25 aces in Hamilton's wild west Flamborough!

I am passionate about working with people who are seeking professional and compassionate support to address areas of distress in their lives - including anxiety, depression, grief, stress and substance use concerns, etc. I believe that people are generally resilient and, at times, require support to inventory their coping skills - by tweaking existing skills and/or adding new tools to their coping toolbox - in order to live balanced lives. I can provide treatment for diagnosed or suspected acute trauma, mood and anxiety disorders.

Separation & divorce is not something you considered when you and your partner were planning your lives together. Unfortunately, divorce is common and is an incredibly painful process which you can't typically prepare for. It can generate intense emotions such as anger, confusion, betrayal, loneliness, and hopelessness. Even if you know it's the right decision, you will likely be experiencing grief over what you had hoped your relationship would be. Co-parenting is another level to manage. This process can make you question who you are, and what your life will look like moving forward.

I know that asking for help can be scary. I also know first hand, that facing difficult times with the right supports and help in place, is easier than facing them alone. Whether you are struggling with intense emotions and thoughts, or it is a behavior that you can not seem to get under control, you do not have to navigate this by yourself. My passion is helping individuals, parents and families learn how to cope and manage more effectively, in order to achieve meaningful change today and hope for the future.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
