I am an accredited family mediator and work with separating and divorcing couples seeking to avoid prolonged legal battles and and resolve conflict in the best interest of their children.
I work with people whose struggle with depression, anxiety, low self esteem or addictions is getting in the way of leading a fulfilling life. For many years I have helped individuals who have experienced trauma and suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. I also work with couples experiencing ruptures in their relationship to help rebuild communication, trust and intimacy . As a family mediator I help couples resolve conflict emerging from separation and divorce.

In my eclectic approach, I offer various strategies and techniques from Transactional Analyses/CBT, Gestalt Therapy, Family/Couple Therapy, Psychodrama and Transpersonal Therapy.
Unfolding, experiencing and living our authentic selves is what I am passionate about. I am highly skilled in guiding clients in accessing and exploring obstacles that are results of our deeply rooted beliefs. Unquestioned beliefs or limiting thoughts that can manifest as anxiety, depression or other psycho-emotional difficulties can actually be guiding lights on our journey to our true Selves. The essence of our being remains untouched as we grow and is waiting to be found and reconnected with. When you connect on a deeper level with your Self, your purpose, gifts, and talents show in their fullness and potentials show up.

I have several years of experience working with adolescents, young adults and families on challenges related to stress, anxiety, emotion regulation, relationship issues, grief, parenting, family conflict and life transitions. I offer a gentle, caring and compassionate approach. I believe in the relationship between therapist and client to help individuals to reflect, explore and grow in order to develop successful relationships outside of therapy. Together, we can make sense of thoughts and feelings and connect them to previous and current experiences to change unhelpful patterns so that you can be your best self.

I employ Western and Eastern modalities - CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy), Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt, Internal Family Systems, Energy Psychology - Yoga, Reiki, Mindfulness and Meditation.
Providing a balance of support and challenge, my approach to healing is holistic and comprehensive. I believe that each individual has all of the inner resources they need to achieve a sense of balance and equanimity. My role is merely to provide a safe, non-judgmental container in which they can reach their own integration - cognitively, emotionally and somatically. I aim to assist the individual's journey-making process through offering new ways at looking through the lens which often gets obscured by many mitigating factors. Clarity is the goal.

I use family systems theory and emotion-focused therapy to map out key points in your past that may be showing up in the present.
Many of us form core identity features around significant injuries in our lives and learn to protect ourselves from similar kinds of pain. Over time, these protective features can become so complex that it can become difficult to know who we really are underneath those defences. Trauma, abuse, neglect, loss of loved ones - these are all major psychological injuries that can alter our self-image, beliefs, and life path. Therapy offers a space where these events can be acknowledged with the significance they deserve and allows us a chance to grow into greater integration with our experiences.

I offer flexible and individualized treatment plan, which may include individual and/or family sessions, in-home sessions, and skills training.
Seek first to understand is central to my work. There are many of us who have gone through life feeling misunderstood and judged and have felt the need to hide parts of our experiences to feel accepted in conversations. Taking the first step to begin talking about your experiences in ways that capture the essence of who you are can feel scary. Creating the space for open and honest conversations about what matters to you help me to better support your journey to self-discovery and growth. I blend a holistic, non-judgment approach with effective evidence-based treatment strategies.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
