I really love to laugh and have fun; I believe that laughing until your belly hurts can be the best antidote to almost anything, especially hard things and my experience over the last 20 years has shown me that this is true. I am proud of the work that I do and proud that clients tell me I am unlike other therapists; they describe me as a real person that cares a lot about the people I work with. I've provided therapy with a range of difficulties and at all stages of life. My goal is to take the time to help you to resolve whatever difficulties you are struggling with so that you can get on with the rest of your life.

I’m a transgender, non-binary, queer, neurodivergent therapist who offers support to adolescents and adults. I specialize in working with queer folks in areas such as gender and sexuality, sex work, sexual violence, depression, anxiety, trauma, and neurodiversity. My work is informed by values of anti-racism, queer theory, and harm reduction. I take a client-centred, affirming approach to sex work, kink, and non-traditional family orientations. I often integrate humour into client interactions to foster genuine connection and build authentic rapport for therapeutic support.

Hi, I'm Sylvia and I'm so glad you're here! I believe at some point or another, we’ve all experienced something that has changed our life. That’s why it’s important within my practice to develop a space where you feel safe and supported. I want to create a strong therapeutic alliance, one where you have a voice and a place to be your true, authentic self. Everyone has the capacity to be resilient and I want our sessions to foster this inner strength. Our time together is ultimately your time.

Clients come to me when they're feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from trying to "keep it together all the time". Often, they're suffering from a combination of burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, fears or low self-esteem. They feel disconnected from themselves and unable to navigate even the simplest of daily challenges. They want support in learning how to reduce the weight of their emotional and physical tensions and regain confidence in their ability to navigate their daily lives.

Therapy is a place to begin healing and achieve personal growth. Counselling can be seen as planting a seed that, with nurturing and attention, will grow into something beautiful. Every individual is akin to a seed that undergoes continual growth, advancing through each fleeting season filled with moments of happiness, sorrows, triumphs, bravery, disappointments, and fresh starts. Like seeds, humans require sources and resources to aid them in reaching their full potential, such as sunlight, rain, and soil. And just like every seed holds importance, every human being also possesses inherent value. By choosing to seek counseling, you have taken the first step towards transformation.

You're here! This step is often the hardest part! Life can be hard... I get it! The stuff that makes life tricky shapes how we see ourselves, how we see others, and how we make sense of the world. Life experiences form our core beliefs that often get in the way of living the life you desire. As an attachment-based therapist, I work hard to create a safe space where you can confront the tough stuff and begin to rewrite your story. I show up with compassion, acceptance, and humour, to dig into what is getting in the way of you living your truth.

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
