Our life is not always easy. Sometimes we feel that everything is quite complicated and confusing. I am here to help you to look at yourself, your beliefs, your emotions, your relationships and your life from a different perspective. Sometimes, when you feel stuck and confused, anxious or depressed you need someone who will be with you and help you on that journey. Sometimes you may feel that something is not right with you, that you are broken or you are not loved, you have issues with self-esteem but it shouldn't be your reality for the rest of your life. We can start looking at that together changing it step by step.

I chose to get into this work because I understand what it’s like to struggle with overwhelming thoughts and feelings and deal with conflict that feels unmanageable. When we don’t feel comfortable to express our emotions and don’t feel safe enough to express our desires, needs, limits, &/ or boundaries, it creates stress, anxiety, anger, and depression, which can lead to issues in our friendships, relationships, families and at work. I have a deep desire to support others who also long to leave behind their overwhelming thoughts and feelings for a life that is fulfilling, instead of just "manageable".

I don’t believe in taking a clinical, cold, transactional approach to therapy. I nurture each relationship I have and view every client as a unique individual requiring a tailored approach. Over the past few years I have helped clients move through anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, life transitions, and relational issues. My client-centred approach allows for a natural flow in our work and creates space for sustainable positive change and long-term success. I want therapy to feel useful and I always welcome feedback, honesty, and laughter in sessions. If this feels like the right approach for you, let’s get connected!

Do you feel stuck? Disconnected from your needs, wants, or sense of self? Are you ready to create movement in your life? Whether you’re focused on school, work, relationships, boundaries, self-discovery, or all of the above, trying to “figure it all out” can be exhausting! If you're unsure of your own needs, you may even feel pressure to live according to expectations of others, causing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, burnout & more. I see you, and I’m here for you. Together we can connect with your empowerment by diving inward to transform patterns that no longer serve you, and looking outward to create changes in your world.

My approach to therapy is Attachment and Interpersonal Neuroscience Based. Adult Attachment Theory (rooted in Attachment science) will uncover the ways our early attachment experiences in childhood, impact our relationships in adulthood. Interpersonal Neuroscience (rooted in Polyvagal Theory) focuses on the role of our nervous system, and why we respond to/interpret “threat” the way we do.

These days EVERYTHING and NOTHING has changed. The pandemic impacted us all differently. Lockdowns were heavenly for some and devastating for others. Many are exhausted from the past couple years having to navigate dramatic and unexpected changes to daily life, employment, finances, school, parenting, relationships, hobbies, etc. If the ways you normally managed life aren't available anymore, aren't working anymore, are sabatoging your relationships or are just plain unhealthy, then maybe it's time to take a look at how you cope?

You’re not crazy for wanting to make sense of it. You’ve watched the videos, “how do I know if I’m in a relationship with a narcissist?” and you’re feeling isolated, embarrassed, confused. They’re talking about your actual life, but you don’t think you’re strong enough to leave. You’ve rationalized, communicated, begged. Maybe they’ll change, but they’re not the problem. You’re the one that needs to change. They say this, so it must be true, right? I need you to know that you’re not stupid or weak for staying. I was once in an abusive relationship with a narcissist, entangled in the chaos, and I doubted my strength to leave.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
