I am passionate about working with individuals from my LGBTQ2S+ community and racialized folks, from ages 14 and up. My lived experience as a queer, Chinese-Canadian woman may help me relate to struggles of those with similar intersecting social identities, yet this does not mean I know nor assume to understand your experiences, as you are the expert. My areas of focus are: LGBTQ2S+ Individuals, BIPOC (racialized) Individuals, Minority Stress, Identity (Exploration, Re-Storying, Acceptance, Integration, Transition), Gender and Sexuality, Trauma and Healing. I work exclusively online or over the phone with client across Canada.

Feeling Blue, out of sorts, unable to concentrate, feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Perhaps you are being pulled in many directions. You may be depressed or dealing with an interpersonal problem. Are there times you are feeling irritated and ready to burst at the seams. Are you dealing with a loss in your life or a family member with a substance abuse issue. Counselling can assist you with determining the problem and develop healthy ways of coping and learn self care techniques. Anxiety can appear when we avoid our feelings and stuff them deep inside. Learn how to set healthy boundaries and ask for what we need from others.

Getting in touch with our strengths and tribulations; relationships and external challenges in a curious way is key; especially during trying times when our ways of coping seem out dated; or past unresolved pain keeps us from enjoying life and relationships. What are some of the helping approaches, skills, and tools that could make a difference in the quality of our lives? What about if we could learn to understand ourselves better, through the messages of our thoughts, feelings and sensations? Our nervous systems, and energies? Are we ready to build resources and take steps in the direction of our goals and well-being?

Everyone deserves to find a space where they can explore their challenges comfortably without fear of judgment. When we find the right space, we are able to let our guard down and turn our attention inward. It's in these moments that we notice shame, depression, anxiety and avoidance, among other coping mechanisms at play. My counselling philosophy is trauma-informed in that I believe there is a survival function behind the difficult emotions, behaviours and thoughts that we experience. I also believe that understanding how these adaptive coping mechanisms are serving us, helps us to move forward with our goals and values.

In 2014, after a devastating loss in my life, I finally sought help for my hidden secrets. I was not aware of the impact that a difficult, violent childhood was continuing to play out in my life. It was difficult to reach out to a professional and to begin to open up my inner world to a stranger. Yet, with respect, kindness, and a genuine caring tone of voice, and an understanding of trauma, the helpers listened. Together we talked and walked and worked through the inside pain. This is what I want to do to help you too.

We are all equipped to defeat our depression, anxiety and anger; however sometimes we get 'stuck' and need a counselling therapist to help us get 'unstuck'. It is possible to find self-therapy such as TEAM CBT therapy to help us get 'unstuck'. We need a therapy that we can take home, to take to work with us and into our relationships. We want a therapy with techniques we can apply to gain mastery over our thoughts. We want a therapy to help us push through any beliefs and attitudes that are stopping us from growing. Most of all, we need a therapy to stop the seeemingly endless pain and a therapist that can teach us how.

Over the years I have worked with many individuals and families experiencing complex life challenges such as: PTSD; childhood trauma and related symptoms (eg. anxiety/depression/substance use/compulsive behaviors); interpersonal relationship challenges, attachment injuries and workplace stress related issues such as compassion fatigue and burnout. Clients who most benefit from my approach are those who are open to exploring their experiences with an open mind, a little self compassion and a lot of patience for the healing process with the goal of making meaningful changes in their lives.

Hi, my name is Kate. If you are reading this, then you have reached a place where you are doing your own research to determine what therapist is going to be the best for you. This is the beginning stage of change where you are putting your own needs first. I applaud you for having the courage to do so. In today’s society it is easy to fill your days to the point where you can distract yourself, from yourself. Therapy provides a way to pause and reflect, and then to set goals to begin to change things in your life; the things that are holding you back from being your true self.

*Now offering in person sessions* It can be difficult to reach out to a professional to open up about your inner world. Learning to trust a therapist can be unnerving. A lot of people see therapy as a one-sided conversation, with little to no opportunity for interaction or getting real experience. I can assure you that as a practitioner, I am as real as it gets. Life is too precious to surrender to unhealthy relationships, grudges, impulsivity, and trauma. Although calling a therapist can be intimidating, I don't believe therapy has to be an intimidating process and I hope you can take a moment to see how I can help.

Now more than ever, our lives are full of uncertainty. Navigating relationships, managing anxiety, and finding joy may be more challenging than before. My practice focuses on children, adolescents, and young adults (and their families) with a wide range of complex learning needs. We are all complex and we are all life-long learners, but that some people are more complex than others. Anxiety, giftedness, social and academic challenges, and any number of other complexities can result in frustration that affects not only the complex learner, but the entire family. We focus on discovering the unique strengths of each individual so we ca capitalize on those areas while also identifying areas of challenge so we can build on or, as necessary, plan to avoid those areas.

What type of mental health professional is right for me?
Some of the most common types of mental health providers in C1A are psychologists, licensed counselors, therapists, psychotherapists, and licensed clinical social workers, all of whom diagnose mental health conditions and provide individualized treatment.

Services offered, education and credentials vary by type of mental health professional. Each professional in C1A then may specialize in certain areas, such as depression, marriage counseling, or anxiety. Although many mental health providers are not licensed to prescribe medication, they may coordinate with a provider who can.

Both in-person and online therapy sessions are available from most psychologists.

How to find a specialist?
You can refine your search using the filters on this page. There are several categories you can filter by to find mental health professionals with the experience you are looking for. You may want to filter for CBT Psychologists in C1A, or Child Psychologists in C1A.

Many find it useful to use filters to view only psychologists that have experience working with certain issues, like C1A psychologists specializing in EMDR.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Psychologists in C1A specialize in therapeutic approaches such as CBT, EMDR, and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), among others. Finding a psychologist or therapist who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

How to use my insurance?
Many therapists accept health insurance. Check to see if your insurance is covered. Feel free to discuss this when you contact the therapist.
