Feeling Blue, out of sorts, unable to concentrate, feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Perhaps you are being pulled in many directions. You may be depressed or dealing with an interpersonal problem. Are there times you are feeling irritated and ready to burst at the seams. Are you dealing with a loss in your life or a family member with a substance abuse issue. Counselling can assist you with determining the problem and develop healthy ways of coping and learn self care techniques. Anxiety can appear when we avoid our feelings and stuff them deep inside. Learn how to set healthy boundaries and ask for what we need from others.

We are all equipped to defeat our depression, anxiety and anger; however sometimes we get 'stuck' and need a counselling therapist to help us get 'unstuck'. It is possible to find self-therapy such as CBT therapy to help us get 'unstuck'. We need a therapy that we can take home, that we can take to work with us and into our relationships. We want a therapy with techniques we can apply to gain mastery over our thoughts. We want a therapy to help us push through any beliefs and attitudes that are stopping us from growing. Most of all, we need a therapy to stop the seemingly endless pain and a therapist that can teach us how..

In a crowded room you can feel completely alone. Disenchanted with the current life you are living and tethered to experiences and hurts of the past. You want to build relationships with those around you but end up in the same cycle of self-sabotage. Exhausted by the high expectations you hold for yourself and overcompensating for the benefit of others. Your wants and needs have taken a backseat for too long. It’s time for a change.

My approach to therapy is client-centred and non-judgemental. I work with the client to create a safe environment where they feel comfortable to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. As a trained Systems therapist, I work to understand the unique context the client is living in because we, just like our mental health, do not exist in a vacuum. We live our unique lives in a way that are influenced by the multiple domains of our life. I will help you explore these domains, to create the change in your life that you are hoping for at this time.

Hi, my name is Kate. If you are reading this, then you have reached a place where you are doing your own research to determine what therapist is going to be the best for you. This is the beginning stage of change where you are putting your own needs first. I applaud you for having the courage to do so. In today’s society it is easy to fill your days to the point where you can distract yourself, from yourself. Therapy provides a way to pause and reflect, and then to set goals to begin to change things in your life; the things that are holding you back from being your true self.

Everyone deserves to find a space where they can explore their challenges comfortably without fear of judgment. When we find the right space, we are able to let our guard down and turn our attention inward. It's in these moments that we notice shame, depression, anxiety and avoidance, among other coping mechanisms at play. My counselling philosophy is trauma-informed in that I believe there is a survival function behind the difficult emotions, behaviours and thoughts that we experience. I also believe that understanding how these adaptive coping mechanisms are serving us, helps us to move forward with our goals and values.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
