I am also a Buddhist and a student of Pema Chodron.
People come to me to heal from trauma, to find ways to face challenges of today, and to grow into who they long to be. Many wrestle with the effects of that trauma on their day to day lives and relationships. Others are struggling with questions of meaning and faith. Some wrestle with guilt and shame and seek healing on a deep level. All are looking to walk with integrity. I have spent over 35 years working with psychology and spirituality. I have a deep understanding of the spiritual teachings and practices of many religions, a personal engagement in Buddhism, and experience in psychotherapy helping people find healing and growth.

I want to welcome new clients. Many of us live from the neck up and are lost in thought. Our bodies carry all our mental energy and pain, and by accessing this we can see which thoughts are helping and which are hurting. There is so much wisdom in all of us that we have not been taught to access. It's time to pay attention. Heal depression, anxiety, trauma, and other debilitating emotions. I am a Registered Psychotherapist with a degree in Psychology from McMaster University. I am a certified Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Facilitator. I specialize in using mindfulness and meditation to heal with Buddhist wisdom.

Therapy doesn't have to be intimidating or shameful. Whether you can't stop thinking about something, never feel good enough, or constantly compare yourself to others, I am here to help. If you are navigating dissociation or flashbacks, struggling with forming your identity or developing meaning in life, I can provide DBT & Trauma informed therapy. Or maybe you're looking for support with leaving a toxic job or relationship, trying to decrease the inner critic and perfectionism, or struggle with focusing and completing a task. Understanding our unconscious motivations and defence mechanisms can also be revealing character work.

Are you suffering from narcissistic abuse and looking to heal your heart from it? Are you sick of always needing to meet others’ needs at the expense of your soul because of the way they always shame you if you don’t meet their demands? If you already fully acknowledge that you currently are or have suffered from narcissistic abuse in your life, that is already a huge step towards your healed heart. A lot of the time, people who have experienced life-long narcissistic abuse have a very difficult time awakening to the reality of the fact that they are suffering from it. They are so used to the abuse that it becomes a norm to them.

Like poet Mary Oliver, many people I’ve met with over the years have questioned how best to live their “one wild and precious life”. Sometimes people have been waylaid by disappointments or losses, and are struggling to recover. Sometimes, their choices have taken them into unhappy cul-de-sacs. Sometimes, their habitual patterns sabotage even the best choices. Sometimes, they’ve been afraid to take necessary risks. And sometimes, people have just been plagued by the sense that more might be possible. What can be done to move towards a full and satisfying life?

I will be there for you, to understand you and give you lots of room for whatever comes up. I work with people who have experienced trauma, pain, and are struggling to make meaning. If you wonder whether your therapist is going to be able to hold space for everything you're bringing, I'm a good fit for you. Whether it's anger, shame, hopelessness, thoughts of death, or things you never told anyone, I will be there and I can help you hold it. I believe in the inherent dignity of all people, and it shows. I am also solution-focused. We do not just sit with pain, we figure out how to make meaning together, so you can live well again.

Sometimes we feel lost, but we are in control. Be in charge of your own life, not out of fear, but out of love. Your path is unique. Dare to live! Problems in child- or adulthood can be diagnosed, but they do not arise 'just like that'. Collaboratively we will work together on finding the root causes for these issues. I focus hereby on attachment, parenting style, present relationship(s) and temperament. If you understand where the problems come from, you are able to address them, with support from the people surround you. If you experience no support, I will support you to mobilize people.

We are not broken, just stuck. Sometimes the way we cope with emotional wounds, anxieties, and fears may in fact be detrimental to us, leaving us trapped by the same patterns in life. I depart from an attachment and trauma-informed perspective and place an emphasis on emotional regulation and experiential integration.

Experiencing loss in life is 100% going to happen. This could be a death, loss of a relationship, a friendship, a pet. Sometimes you can see it coming and wonder if there is any way to stop it. Other times you're blindsided. Now your world feels unstable or $h!t is upside down. Navigating or preparing for loss is isolating & may make you feel and do all sorts of confusing things. You may be trying to emerge from this with a deeper understanding of yourself, improve your relationships, find confidence in your direction in life, restore a sense of safety/stability in the world or just cope with what is happening. Either way, I'm here.

Is buddhism beneficial for mental health?

While Buddhism itself is not a treatment for mental health conditions, its practices can greatly enhance mental well-being by introducing coping skills and ideas that promote overall wellness. Key Buddhist practices, such as mindfulness, have been shown to alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma. Moreover, Buddhism's focus on self-compassion, non-judgment, and acceptance can benefit individuals with particularly negative or self-critical thought patterns.

What are the concepts and principles of buddhism as a therapeutic approach?

Core Buddhist principles are often used in therapy to help clients gain insight into their thoughts and emotions. Concepts such as suffering (dukkha) and impermanence (anicca) are applied to help clients recognise that common forms of suffering, like repetitive negative thought patterns, can be accepted and viewed as impermanent. The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path are additional core concepts utilised frequently in Buddhist therapy sessions. The Four Noble Truths highlight the existence of suffering as an inherent part of the human experience—an insight frequently used to move clients toward greater acceptance. The Eightfold Path, which includes right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right concentration, and right mindfulness, offers practical skills to alleviate suffering.

What is the buddhist approach and practice during a therapy session?

Therapists informed by Buddhist principles often integrate mindfulness and meditation practices into therapy sessions to help clients cultivate greater acceptance, compassion, and non-judgment toward themselves and others. Typically, Buddhist therapists guide clients through mindfulness exercises, such as breathing exercises or body scans, and encourage them to practice similar exercises outside of sessions. Additionally, many Buddhist therapists utilise elements of Positive Psychology or Compassion-Focused Therapy, which can help reduce symptoms of self-criticism and shame common among clients with various mental health conditions. In general, Buddhist therapists strive to embody the compassion and non-judgmental approach they promote, often incorporating exercises aimed at developing compassion in session, such as loving-kindness meditation (Metta).

Is mindfulness the same as buddhism in the context of therapy?

While Buddhist therapists frequently integrate mindfulness practices into therapy sessions, the terms mindfulness and Buddhism are not synonymous in the context of therapy. Therapists may use mindfulness techniques, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), without identifying as a Buddhist therapist. In contrast, those practicing within a Buddhist belief framework typically encourage mindfulness therapies, in addition to foundational Buddhist beliefs, such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These therapists may also guide clients toward a deeper understanding of Buddhist philosophy, unlike those who use Buddhist mindfulness principles without the broader spiritual context.
