I believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. In addition to specializing couples counseling and adults, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (14+) and families. I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry.

Hi, thanks for clicking! And congrats on starting/returning to therapy. A little about me, I've worked in mental health since 2012, starting in hospitals and non-profits before private practice. I help people with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, life changes, and interpersonal/family issues. I have a mixed cultural background. I don't incorporate spirituality in therapy. I often help with religious trauma/conflicts. I'm a dog person, but work with cat people and others :) I work with clients from all races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, etc. I also work with active/retired military.

Hello You! Welcome to this brief introduction about me and the modality I use. My hope in working with you, is to help you liberate extreme emotions, restore trust in yourself to live in balance, harmony, and wholeness. So many of us are living in overwhelm, anxiety, depression, and relationship conflicts; it is time to become emotionally whole and connected to others. This is an inside job, and it is worth it to be reflective, to see why you do the things you do and feel the emotions you do. The work is hard and ultimately worth, you are worthy of this journey to a fuller connection to your true self and those you love.

Have you been discouraged by your dire trying to stop something that stresses you out through the bombardment of non-stop racing thoughts, flashbacks or even the act of over thinking situations? Consistently finding yourself trying to get out of a pool of depressive thoughts, anxiety or anger that are chronically affecting you and your family to the point of feeling lost and hopeless. In spite of having the flood of helpful and educational information “out there”, here we are, still STUCK in pain and suffering. The scars of unbearable emotional pain portray itself through our emotional, physical and spiritual health.

I offer support and validation, as well as a gentle push when necessary, in order to help you gain better control of your life and emotions.

If you have felt the impact of life transitions including anxiety, depression, stress, or relationship and self-esteem issues, therapy can be a beautiful step towards a more fulfilling life. Therapy provides an opportunity to process and explore, in a judgement free space, in order to build upon strengths and identify areas ready for growth and change. As a therapist working in Virginia for well over a decade, I have provided services to both adolescents and adults, assisting with stressors associated with mental health, family and relationship dynamics, communication struggles, life stage changes, and women's issues.

My areas of interest and treatment specialties include: anxiety, depression, trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, chronic pain, health psychology, substance use, sexuality/identity questions, work/life balance, concerns or issues affecting one’s quality of life, and relationship issues.
I believe in helping individuals and couples gain insight and make behavioral changes to improve well-being. I believe empathy is important in the therapeutic alliance and I strive to create a safe space where the client(s) can feel comfortable in therapy and actively engage in treatment. With individuals, my approach to therapy is based in cognitive-behavioral theory, but also flexible and pragmatic, depending on the individual’s needs. With couples, I primarily utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, and provide strategies to enhance effective communication, strengthen trust, deepen intimacy and manage conflict.

My caseload is full of dynamic and wonderful clients who seek to change the way they relate to themselves, their life circumstances, and their relationships. I have a particular interest working with recovering alcoholics actively working their 12-step program but are "just feeling stuck". In addition, I especially enjoy supporting women seeking to be authentic to themselves and those around them. Together, we will identify your goals and I will support you in pursuing your personal growth, finding your own answers and balance, and identifying and resolving how your past may be unconsciously impacting your day-to-day life.

I remember being in high-school; the world seemed both exciting and overwhelming. What I love about working with teens the most is that I get to witness their impressive resilience, refreshing sense of humor, and inspiring idealism. Adolescence can be a turbulent time for young people and their families. High school students struggle with the effects of social media, body image, fatigue, friendship issues, academic pressures; they don't always know how to reach out for support. The most valuable thing that I can offer is my unconditional positive regard for my teen clients and their families.

Becoming a person LLC is a project that I took on as a quest to understand how we become who we are. This quest took me further than psychology to the wide world of neurobiology, epigenetic, child development, evolutionary science, old world traditions and nature. The more research I did the more these sciences fitted together like different pieces to the same puzzle, telling me there is one universal answer to the human agony. In my work with my clients I utilize all that I learned in a holistic and integrative approach, a well designed system that help them look at life differently, outward and from within.

Welcome, I truly believe that therapy is a brave and courageous choice. I strive to create a warm, empathetic, and safe environment for each client that chooses to work with me. I have a special expertise working with both adolescents and adults with mood disorders. Our relationship will be used as an element of change. Often, I will utilize aspects of our relationship to highlight barriers to change and provide a warm and directive approach to push you towards growth. My approach within our therapeutic relationship tends to be more collaborative and I commonly use interventions including mindfulness, CBT, DBT and attachment theory.

Do people ask how you are doing and the answer is always “fine” or “ok”? Or maybe you avoid letting yourself feel uncomfortable emotions? Possibly putting off facing them until you feel more ready, but that day never comes? Depression, anxiety, and trauma can do that to us. They can change our trajectory in life, veer us off course of who we were meant to be. Shadows from the past can loom over us forever. If this is your experience, my sincerest hope is one day you will feel ready to no longer allow your past to place limits on the future.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
