Life is hard. We do the best we can to solve our problems with the knowledge we have. But sometimes we find ourselves in a difficult spot where we need fresh perspectives and new thinking tools to help us deal with our problems in a healthier way. That is the benefit of counseling. In a safe and affirming environment, I help my clients find solutions to problems that are solvable, learn to better cope with those that are unsolvable, and discover deeper joy and meaning in life.

Over the last 11 years, I have had the privilege of working with great people in helping them achieve their potential. I focus especially on creating healthy relationships within the family environment, and teaching children positive self esteem and respect for themselves and others. I apply positive psychology and strength-based training to increase the abilities and desires of youth to succeed and improve performance at home and at school. I have tremendous respect for the notion that no one is great at everything, but through hard work everyone can be great at something.

Hello! I am Marcia Light, I have intensely worked as a counselor helping clients to gain more clarity and reveling their own strengths and potential. My clients learn strategies to accomplish their goals and achieve overall well-being. Yeah, life can be distressing, emotions can get on the way and sometimes we can feel stuck and overwhelmed in negative patterns of thinking, feeling, or behaving.

My practice is named En Route because in my experience all of us are on some form of journey. Sometimes our journeys are smooth, other times they're complicated and maybe frightening. Very few people create and sustain change all alone. Community is essential and it can be fun. There are so many directions to head and goals to accomplish on our journeys; it is my honor and privilege to join people and groups on their paths. Turns out a lot of us learn best by doing. Horses help us make real time change and offer instant feedback. It doesn't hurt that horses have much in common with people and act as great relationship role models.

I was in the ER when a mom brought in her son who had broken his arm. The little guy became frantic as the doctor tried to evaluate: “No, don’t touch it!” Then the boy had an idea, holding up his other arm and brightly suggesting, “Here, look at this arm.” Psychotherapy works best when we go to the brokenness of our hearts, not getting distracted by blame, who else should change, or what’s unfair on our planet. Reverence and irreverence, support and confrontation, cold numbers and warm intuition: I blend them all. I also keep in mind the end goal: get well enough, close out psychotherapy, and get on with living.

My purpose in working with clients, metaphorically speaking, is not to command another person's vessel; rather, to serve as a trusted navigator through uncertain waters. I support and protect my client's autonomy and purpose in discovering the best version of themselves through objectivity, self-discovery, and occasional service as a devil's advocate, if necessary; for example, "admit that you are weak... And then prove yourself wrong. Purposely and with passion."

I specialize in creating a space where patients can feel safe to share who they really are and what they are experiencing. This allows them to naturally become aware of changes they want to make and gives them support as they explore those changes. I am honored to be invited to accompany patients on their healing journey and feel deep respect for those courageous enough to engage in the process of healing and changing their lives.

"It is not uncommon to feel alone in our challenges, I believe it is important for us to feel that we are Not alone." I love the opportunity to help those individuals and their family members who are ready for change, whether that be in day to day living, problem solving, thinking patterns, relationships, resurfacing memories, repetitive behaviors, anger or mood imbalance. I have been a practicing therapist since 2004 and have treated multiple types of anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment issues, abuse/neglect, PTSD and other mood and behavioral disorders. I also work with first responders and veterans.

I firmly believe there is a function to our behavior. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes not. And sometimes, while our behavior made sense at one time, maybe even to the point of saving our life, it is no longer serving us. We're all just doing the best that we can but sometimes the way we're coping leads to highly negative impacts on our body, mind, spirit, & relationships. A wise mentor once shared with me that our capacity for change comes from our ability (and willingness) to reflect. I seek to empower my clients to gain the tools and self-awareness they need in order to cultivate a sense of peace and personal agency.

My clients come to me feeling that life, motherhood, marriage, or just life in general is not what they had hoped for. I often hear from my new clients: “I feel overwhelmed.” “I'm stuck and don’t know how to move forward.” “I feel like I am failing my kids.” “I am burnt out but don’t know what to change.” Can you relate? Motherhood is hard. And even harder when you struggle with guilt, shame, boundaries, and perfectionism. Without help, it’s easy to stay stuck and feed those negative beliefs.

Life is a process and journey. When one feels stuck (sometimes chronically stuck), it is vital to understand why they are stuck and how to get moving forward again. I strive to help my clients to honestly and courageously seek to understand the conceptual nature of their problems with trauma, addiction, and relationship patterns. When clients can attend, listen, understand, validate, care, and nurture themselves, they can find their way in the journey. As couples and families learn to see each other, create and maintain safety and security, and soothe each other they can find deep and satisfying connections.

Eclectic Therapists
Many practitioners take an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing upon various aspects of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic methods to create their own custom-made approach. Such therapists often work with their clients to create a treatment plan that encompasses different techniques to best address the client's particular problems and to appeal to their sensibility.
