I've focused my practice on substance use issues and addictive problems in people lives. For years I worked with women in eating disorders treatment utilizing an addictions model. Later I focused on men, and substance use disorders. Problems can stem from using drugs as an unproductive coping skill to a deeper more physiologically based problem. Our first job together is to find what your specific problem looks like and then find a way forward that's suited to your needs. In addition I also offer services evaluating clients for Substance Use Disorders in Family Law and Criminal cases.

Do you struggle with substance use affecting every aspect of your day-to-day life? Maybe there's damage to your relationships, ability to function, job, or career. Do you feel trapped by the inability to freely choose your thoughts, emotions, or actions? Is getting through the day without self-medicating difficult or impossible? Do you wonder if it’s even possible that your experience of life could be better? Now more than ever, so many people feel anxious, overwhelmed, or uncertain about retaking control of their lives because they don't know how; or fear keeps blocking their best intentions. No wonder you’re so stressed.

Struggling with relationships? Experiencing the many ways substance use can create pain, whether for you or someone you love? Are you living with a mental health condition that requires support? Identifying limiting beliefs and unhelpful behaviors is an essential step to living an emotionally stable life, whatever difficult crossroads you may be experiencing. Often, emotional recovery begins with healing long-buried childhood trauma. And I believe relief can sometimes happen as early as the first session. (Licensed in CA, TX and FL.)

Pulling from 20 years in the field, I have specialized experience with relationship dynamics, family therapy, complex emotional wounding and trauma, parent coaching and consulting, children and adolescents, substance use disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, severe mental illness, life transitions, and disordered eating.
Have you tried everything to understand or fix a problem, but it just keeps showing up? I believe complicated problems require complex understanding. I aim to help every client gain greater insight into themselves and the dynamics at play in their life, relationships, and experience. Insight alone can have a powerful and significant impact on progress and is at the heart of my work. However, lasting change often also requires learning and trying new ways of interacting with the world. I offer information, suggestions, and encouragement to assist you in feeling, thinking, and, ultimately, living better.

I specialize in working with teens and young adults around the issues of trauma, adoption, substance use, depression, self-harm, family conflict, and life transitions. I know these time periods in life are especially challenging, and no problem is too big or too small for therapy. If you are feeling like you don't know what could possibly make life more manageable or how to stop behaviors that are no longer helpful, I can be of help. Teens and young adults are my passion, and I have seen I am able to deeply connect with them.

My specialties include working with individuals wanting to process: depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem, emotional issues, relationship issues, substance use/ addiction, and grief and loss.
Are you feeling lost and not sure what the next step is? I am here to process those thoughts and talk with you. It is not uncommon to lose connection with our voice and inner self. I am here to help you rebalance and re-discover how to connect with that piece of you. We all have the ability to heal ourselves; however, life challenges can throw that balance off. Though therapy, we can regain our strength and overcome barriers or strengthen areas where we want to grow by actively working on improvement and embracing the process of change.

I have experience working with the LGBTQ community, specifically trans folks (adults, children, and their families), mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, as well as family dynamics.
At times, it can feel like the world is spinning out of control. Whether it be our personal and professional lives, interpersonal relationships, navigating a series of collective and systemic traumas, or a mixture of these things. Sometimes we are looking for ways to improve our situation, other times we are looking to find acceptance and to sit with what's out of our control. Sometimes we can find ways to distract from these things, and then there are instances where we need to face them head on. How do we know what we need to do, and when?

I served in the nonprofit world for years prior to my work with repeat offenders. I have coordinated groups for those struggling with substance use and anger management. I have worked in a correctional facility, where I had much exposure to those in crisis and with acute mental illness. Now, I mostly work with adults addressing trauma, depression, anxiety, and everyday stress. I am very family-oriented and have always prioritized the importance of relationships. As a licensed professional counselor, I provide a safe place for you to work on the most important relationship- the one you have with yourself.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
