Hello, my name is Charles Plafcan, and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 11 years of clinical experience working with various individuals with Aging, Alzheimer's, Depression, Grief, and many more. I've worked with adolescence and families for around 25 years in a variety of settings. These settings include being a youth / children's pastor prior to starting my counseling journey. Although I am licensed to practice counseling through the State of Texas, I am a Christian and the fundamentals of my practice are in line with traditional Christian faith.

I perform evaluations and expert testimony for the courts in criminal law, family law, civil law, immigration law and military justice. My specialities include sexual abuse, child witnesses, violent behavior, and mitigation at sentencing.

My goal is to help those suffering from emotional or relationship problems, self-defeating patterns of behavior, and recurring periods of uncertainty or self-doubt. I also specialize in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression, anxiety-related disorders, personality disorders, and PMDD. My approach to therapy involves understanding how difficult experiences from our past can affect the way we feel and behave in the present. Our past experiences are often the reason we sometimes struggle with the same emotional and relationship problems throughout life. It is only through understanding our past struggles can we expect to achieve a lasting and meaningful change in the present.

I am a psychologist who is board certified in sleep medicine. I treat insomnia, virtually any sleeping disorder, and circadian rhythm disorders, in children and adults. I use evidence based medicine approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy of insomnia (CBT-I), CBT for anxiety and depression, and IRT for nightmares and PTSD. I directed the sleep disorders center at Children's Medical Center and the sleep medicine fellowship program at UT Southwestern Medical Center. CBT-I is rapid and efficacious for treatment of insomnia. CBT is also time limited for anxiety and/or depression. IRT works rapidly for nightmares.

I believe in the redemptive power of relationships and have championed the cause for more than a decade by walking alongside adults, couples, children, and families. As an adoptive parent and psychotherapist, I also understand and respect both the pressures involved in building a family, coupled with the unique gifts and learning experiences that the adoption dynamic brings.
