I am 67 years young. I have been a clinical social worker/psychotherapist in the Brazos Valley since 1988. I have a good "grapevine" of local professionals, so I often help clients with information/referral to resources for on-going support beyond therapy. I welcome questions you may have. I can be reached by text at 979-255-7004 or email at ruthhelpertnunez@gmail.com. Also, please check out my Facebook page. I accept new clients as I have time slots available. I offer some evening appointments, as well as afternoon appointments, but no weekends. I will be semi-retiring in 2024, but will continue to maintain a small practice.

Do you feel like you and your spouse get stuck in the same argument? Maybe you feel disconnected from those you love and care about. Perhaps you even feel like you don't know who you are anymore. You feel alone and tired of pretending everything is OK. You've tried everything but you just don't know how to make your relationships better. What you do know is that when your important relationships feel safe, you feel happy and life feels great. That's because we are created for connection and are our best when our relationships are thriving. When we have negative patterns of interaction, we get stuck in the same argument.

You don't have to suffer in siIence anymore. In our fast changing world, finding balance can be difficult and may even seem impossible at times. Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and the thoughts of giving up make it hard to push forward when you have conflicting goals, objectives, and situations in your life. They can seem to happen all at once, and it feels like they are all demanding our energy, thoughts, and immediate choices in order to progress and change. Anxious or depressing thoughts and feelings accompany the trying times of life, and therapy can be a way to get yourself and/or your family up to optimal functioning.

My approach is all about empowering you to see your life from a fresh perspective so you can find the way forward. My goal is to partner with you to unearth new choices you might not have considered and embrace your strengths. For me, the most rewarding part of being a therapist is helping someone move in their journey from struggling to thriving. Sessions involve lots of feedback, encouragement, and focus on what you're doing right.

My philosophy on therapy comes from a humanistic approach with the idea that you can work through and feel a range of emotions without having to suppress them.
It can be scary to reach out to a therapist because you want to make sure you can find someone who can connect with you or understand your family dynamics. I enjoy working with preteens, teens, young adults and parents. If you are a parent of a teen in therapy I will keep you involved in the process. If you are a parent, family or an individual who is seeking a therapist that places a high value on providing a safe judgment free zone I look forward to working with you and guiding you to realize your capacity for growth. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and I look forward to getting to know you and your story!

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
