I have a long history of experience, 20 years, with dealing with mental health and co-occurring disorders (people who experience mental health issues as well as a substance use problem).
Currently Accepting New Self-Pay Clients. Telehealth Only. Are you having a problem with alcohol? Cannot stop using drugs? Struggling with a negative attitude? Have racing thoughts? Worry about everything? Just plain feeling down in the dumps, hopeless even? Maybe it is time to make a change. Maybe it is time to stop bottling up and stuffing those negative emotions. Maybe it is time to stop avoiding all your problems and letting them build up. It is time to take control of your life.

For the person who finds their self re-creating harmful patterns, in negative relationships, acting out of anxiety, depression or emotional pain and using alcohol or drugs more then they want. Even if you use alcohol or drugs a couple times a week to cope. You may not identify with having a substance problem but are interested in harm reduction, patterns of substance misuse, and want change, reach out and we can explore it together, even if you have been abstinent from substances but are concerned about thinking and behaviors. I use a holistic, person-centered approach, along with CBT to provide individualized treatment.

The anxiety, depression, and identity issues that can arise from trauma and other personal issues can confuse and defeat our best intentions for ourselves - especially when the trauma was experienced early in life, interrupting the developmental cycle. I am here for those who find they struggle to create change in their lives due to early trauma or who struggle to overcome the outmoded and worn stories that do not serve the person they would like to be. In working together you will discover and apply coping skills for everyday triggers, broaden self-regulation, and develop self-awareness.

Hello, my name is Dr. Christopher Johnson. Sound Mind Psychology LLC is my private practice & I enjoy working with individuals dealing with a variety of issues. I have found that many of my clients seek meaning and purpose in their lives, deeper connection to others, or answers to difficult life questions. Over time, these issues can lead to stress, anxiety, depression or other forms of mental health struggle. When this happens, daily tasks can seem pointless and exhausting. I value meeting people in these situations so that together we can explore goals and solutions for the future. Please email me at drcmjohnson32@smpsychology.com

The therapeutic process starts when you find a clinician you connect with, and I recognize how difficult and stressful that may be for you. My primary focus is to create a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental space where you can feel genuinely heard, understood, and supported. I aim to build a strong therapeutic alliance with you, exploring your concerns, identifying your strengths, and developing effective strategies for positive change.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
