I believe my clients are the experts in their lives. I see myself as a facilitator of conversations that lead my clients to new perspectives. Therapy is an opportunity to take control of one's problems and as an opportunity to become the preferred version of oneself. My hope is to provide you with the tools and perspective to know that even when you FEEL there is nothing but closed roads, detours and wrong way signs in life, you KNOW you possess the power to strive for, obtain and maintain THROUGH and OVER it all.

Emily Dickinson’s poem “Not in Vain”, hung on my wall growing up and I often think its essence seeped into my being. She wrote, “If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain: If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain”. As therapists, we choose to work within the world of emotions and behaviors, learning healthy techniques to bring balance to our mind, body, and spirit. Counseling is a judgement free setting, with an objective listener; where everyone is welcome and can be supported.

I have worked with clients with issues such as marital problems, but they improved self-esteem, advocacy, and assertiveness in therapy, which reduced conflict with their spouse. My ideal client is someone motivated to change at the onset of therapy, who is committed to attending regular therapy sessions, identifies their goals, and focuses on a collaborative process to achieve their goals.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
