For many years I struggled with shame and doubt about who I was, often feeling lost and hopeless. I would exercise my feelings through control or passivity in relations with others. It wasn't until I received help from a counselor that I started my journey of healing that lead to my discovery of an authentic self who could practice healthy relationships, acceptance, love, and feel worthy from the inside out. At that point I chose to become a Counselor so as to assist others in their journeys of self discovery.

It can be very difficult to take the first step to seek counseling. My intent the moment you walk through the door is for you to feel safe, cared for, listened to, and above all, understood. I am not here to judge or condemn. We all have our stuff. Life gets messy. Life can be complicated. We all need help. I am a people person, which means you have value, simply because you are. I am empathetic, I listen, I am real, and I can help.

I have worked with individuals, couples, families, and groups. My current focus is primarily on people dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, attachment, life transitions, trauma, family and other interpersonal issues. I use a highly respectful approach in helping my clients address their issues and build effective coping and communication skills. This can include identifying and shifting limiting patterns (based on experiences of the past) that have continued to influence their present-day emotions, attitudes, interactions, expectations, and decisions. I work with each individual in a way that empowers them to stay in charge of their own therapeutic process.

Deciding to begin therapy takes courage. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the key to growth and change. As your therapist, I work to create a space in which you are free to be yourself more fully. I will work closely with you to understand yourself and your life on a deep level. Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings, relationships, and behaviors, working to uncover what is often out of our awareness, and patterns in our lives. This process can feel daunting and unsettling, requiring patience and perseverance, but can lead to symptom relief and meaningful change.

I am actively accepting new clients. If you are seeking help with trauma, an eating disorder, struggles with food, your body, or anything in between, there are options other than what we have been taught. Our culture and our world often create an environment for people that encourages self denial. A wide variety of traumas often leave people with chronic feelings of fear, trouble with sleep, relationship distress, and dependence on something that might harm them.

Are you or your child worried, striving, and exhausted, yet things don't seem to be as you wish? Are there parts of you ready to give up, while other parts push or criticize you even harder? Does it seem like familiar feelings, thoughts, and cycles go on and on, despite your best efforts? These are common experiences and frustrating. They don't seem to enhance our lives or family. Together we will bring an understanding of what is coming up for you and why. We will develop helpful skills and approaches that increase your odds of experiencing your hopes for relationships worth having, and a life worth living.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
