My psychoanalytic training gives me a deep respect for unconscious processes and mindfulness training and practice invites curiosity, compassion and a non-judgmental attitude in our work together.
Psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery that will help you connect with your inner life, unbind from the past, and live fully in the present. As you learn about and acknowledge different aspects of yourself, you will find rough spots, as well as resources. All parts of your experience play important roles and we can understand what has been useful, what parts might be modified, as well as parts that offer strength and support that can be built upon. These discoveries remove potential obstacles to your growth and open avenues for connection and well-being.

Openings now! Hours: afternoon & evenings tu/w/f -E-MAIL for faster reply- I am trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, an insight oriented process of understanding the roots of symptoms, patterns of relating, behavior, thoughts, and personality.
SLOTS open NOW! Many of my clients come seeking clarity on why they feel the way they feel, what's getting in the way of their goals, and how they have established patterns of relating that do not serve them. Others struggle with long-term mental health issues, trauma or crisis. I work with clients to solve problems and diminish symptoms by exploring the roots of their troubles. Through my training and careful listening, I empower my clients to create lasting change in their lives through the insight we gain together while providing a safe space to connect and experience relief.

As a graduate of Columbia School of Social Work and the Psychoanalytic Institute at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health, I have over 20 years of experience providing mental health care.
The world is a challenging place. Having a safe and responsive relationship with an experienced therapist can help you navigate those challenges. No matter what you might be going through, it is important to speak with someone you feel comfortable with who you can trust. I have extensive experience working with individuals across the life span. My approach draws from a range of empirically-based practices tailored to meet your needs. Drawing from psychodynamic, as well as mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy practices, sessions are designed to address your goals while keeping your top-most concerns in mind.

My practice is psychoanalytically based, relationally oriented, personalized, creative and built on many years of experience working with individuals, couples and families in the fields of education, child & family welfare, community mental health, addiction medicine, career development and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist's expertise and experience are very important, but the key ingredient of effective therapy is a "good fit" between you and your therapist. If you'd like to see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you.

I'm a faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, where I teach and supervise professionals in our postgraduate programs in psychotherapy, and am also the Chair of our Consultation and Treatment Service.
I specialize in individual and couples therapy, particularly for people negotiating midlife crises and transitions. I can help you to understand yourself and other people better, and to find meaning for yourself in midlife and beyond. I give a regular talk at NYU School of Medicine on coping effectively with midlife challenges. I've also published a recent journal article on midlife issues in the Psychoanalytic Review, Oct. 2019: "Generativity and Its Viscissitudes." For couples work, broadly speaking, I have experience working with nonconventional relationships, and am queer, kink, and CNM/poly friendly.

I have been teaching and supervising trainees in postgraduate psychoanalytic training institutes since 1985 and have a wide network of colleagues.
I'm a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with more than 35 years of experience. My goal is to enable my clients to better understand themselves and their hidden emotional conflicts. Self-awareness and self-knowledge are empowering because our deepest desires for love, connectedness, and achievement are typically tangled up in bad feelings - like shame, guilt or anxiety -- that obstruct us from pursuing their fulfillment. These bad feelings are often based on unrealistic ideas, the residues of childhood experience. I work with clients to disentangle their vital wishes from these constraints so that they can live more authentic and creative lives.

With more than 10 years experience, I offer an integrated approach of contemplative psychotherapy and psychoanalytic thought.
Psychotherapy is a practice of deep listening and understanding. I help people develop insight into their troubles and look into habitual patterns that may create obstacles to their life goals. Together, we identify these patterns, explore feelings, and put effective coping skills into practice. When working with children, my approach invites the family in. Parent coaching, which involves a neurobiological understanding, and psychodynamic insight are integral. Through play therapy I help children discover ways to communicate their experience. The purpose is to establish a connection that encourages growth and the sense that children have a positive impact in their world.

With a PhD in clinical psychology and completed psychoanalytic training, I teach psychiatry residents at Mt.
With over 30 years of private practice, I have seen major changes in people resolving problems and changing their lives for the better. You may come in with issues such as relationships difficulties, anxiety, depression, narcissism, sexual identity, coping with stress, self-sabotage, lack of confidence, problems with aging, and others, which we can deal with together. In therapy, we have an opportunity to identify repetitive patterns and assumptions that interfere with a satisfying life. I bring an analytically informed approach, while maintaining a focus on your present life and interactions, as well as using the relationship between us as a valuable source of information.

Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a unique practice of listening to the unconscious undertones of life: what one wants, and what gets in the way of achieve it. As a tool to understand what our bodies and minds are communicating through anxiety, addiction and repetitive patterns, talk therapy can build links and bring to the foreground what has been kept hidden or secret. By understanding the function and survival mechanism of our defenses, and by connecting free-associative speech to our desires, we are given a new choice as to what we want to hold on to, and what we can let go of.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
