I have formal post-graduate training in DBT Skills Training, Mindful Awareness, Relational Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and Archetypal Analysis.
Too often psychotherapy focuses on causality, pathology and cures. However, rather than being "sick" or 'broken", often we are just lost inside ourselves or relationships. Everyone is a unique person with their own story, experience and perspective. The goal of therapy is to achieve a deeper awareness of where we are, to discover internal meaning for our many experiences, and to experience a life worth living. While working towards that awareness, I also feel it important to teach individuals, couples and families the skills needed to cope with the pain and day to day stressors that bring them into therapy.

Trained in psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic perspectives, I offer depth-oriented treatment that helps you take on your difficulties at the root.
Whether it’s your first time considering therapy or you're a seasoned therapy-goer hoping to find someone new, it’s important to find a good match between you and your therapist. Whether you’re feeling sad and in pain, experiencing anxiety, having relationship problems, grieving a loved one, stuck in self-defeating patterns, questioning your future, or have a nagging sense of shame—speaking vulnerably with another person requires trust that builds over time. We are all deserving of living more fully, authentically, and with greater ease; making that first call for help is an essential step toward finding the right therapist for you.

I approach individual psychotherapy from a psychoanalytic perspective.
My couples therapy work has spanned 20 years. In addition to the attraction and happiness of being a couple, there are always challenges. I use an interactional model to help you understand the sources of difficulties so that you can emerge from therapy with ways of solving conflicts. I have worked with couples who are thinking of moving in or marrying, are married or living together, are considering divorce. are divorcing or are in post divorce situations. Parenting issues are an area of particular interest to me.

While I would describe my overall approach as eclectic, I am primarily interested in an existential/humanistic approach but also bring in aspects of psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic, person-centered, cognitive behavioral, as well as reflective practice approaches, among others.
Hello, my name is Rebecca Anderson and I have worked in the mental health field for almost 23 years and have been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California for over 13 years. I practice direct, open, and honest communication, and encourage that in others, focusing on self-empowerment, self-care, and healthy boundaries. My approach is reflective and insight-oriented and fosters self-knowledge and self-acceptance.

Trauma, stress, and other painful experiences can cause us to develop negative thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and the world, keeping us stuck, and preventing us from moving forward. You may feel overwhelmed, powerless, hopeless, depressed or anxious or experience panic attacks. You tell yourself to "get over it," blame ourselves when we can't, and are often ashamed to let anyone know that we are struggling. You do not have to keep repeating the same patterns; life does not have to be all about pain and suffering. You can heal from your trauma, moving beyond those old behaviors to live happy, satisfying, fulfilling lives.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
