I have maintained a general practice approach and enjoy working with a variety of difficulties including childhood disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, and personality disorders, I have experience working with individuals who have substance abuse problems. My experiences have allowed me to work with a wide range of people. An example of a few areas I have worked with include graduate students, LGBT individuals, and healthcare professionals including those who work in mental health. A recent addition and growing interest is working with individuals who have developed addictions to prescription medication and do not readily fit into the more general substance abuse population.

I take an active approach, using mindfulness training, cognitive restructuring and behavioral assignments between sessions to make treatment more engaging, enjoyable and worthwhile. While empathy and compassion are the core of therapy, simply talking about a problem is often not enough to bring about meaningful and lasting change. I specialize in treating many forms of anxiety, but I am trained and experienced in treating a wide rage of mental health problems and, in any case, I approach therapy with the assumption that you are far more complex and interesting than any diagnosis can fully capture.

Many of us are fortunate to have friends and family who listen to our problems and concerns. But, sometimes, that may not be enough and we need the help and guidance of a skilled and experienced professional. We also want to be sure that we are getting an objective and unbiased opinion. I am a very active participant in the sessions, giving feedback and making suggestions. Most people come in with specific "here and now" issues they want to resolve. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of several approaches useful in addressing both current issues and those of longer duration.

Whether you are experiencing a change or wanting to make one, the therapy process can help you through it. Finding a therapist that fits your needs is important. I work hard to meet clients "where they are" in making change, and approach therapy in a non-judgmental, transparent, collaborative, authentic, open, warm, and direct manner. I prioritize open dialogue about our therapy process to ensure you are getting what you want from our work together, and invite client feedback to hold me accountable to providing good clinical service. I am an active therapist, and see my role as guiding clients through an often unfamiliar process.

Every stage in life, every situation we face, brings with it challenges, hardships and opportunities. The psychotherapeutic process brings focus and awareness to where we are now in our lives, where we've been, and the person we want to be. I see the therapeutic process as a journey that we take together. Whether you are an adult, adolescent, or family, my goal is to create a safe, caring, non-judgmental environment where you can explore relationship dynamics, patterns of behavior, identity, and opportunities for growth and change.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
