My practice combines a psychodynamic approach coupled with trauma modalities, such as EMDR and Somatic Experiencing (SE).
I believe that mental health is the ability to respond to setbacks and disappointments - that is, life events - with flexibility and resilience. Unfortunately, childhood misattunements with caregivers, traumas, and neglect shape responses that become fixed patterns throughout life. With therapeutic support, positive attachment relationships can be forged, and old memories can lead to new insights, which can inspire more adaptive reactions.

To this end, my work includes evidence-based somatic, emotional, and behavioral techniques.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist offering trauma-informed, psychodynamic therapy to individuals. My clinical practice focuses on working with those who have experienced traumas ranging from single incidents, to identity-based traumas, to traumatizing childhood contexts. I also routinely see patients who struggle with anxiety, depression, and identity-related issues. Most of my patients have difficulty tolerating strong emotions and have interpersonal issues or an unstable sense of themselves. Whatever challenges you might be experiencing, you can expect to be treated with sensitivity, respect, compassion, and without judgment.

I integrate several modalities when working together, including EMDR & Somatic Experiencing for those looking to address trauma, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), play therapy, and sandtray.
I specialize in treating maternal mental health, young children, and women in various life transitions. I believe that providing a safe and flourishing atmosphere for individuals and families to explore and process through their hopes, fears, and past has the potential to provide immense healing. Early parenthood and life transitions often awaken a myriad of emotions from past experiences and future unknowns. This awakening can shape the way in which we and our children experience and react to the world. It takes a village, and therapy can be an important part of our village.

Psychodrama is a rich modality that blends seamlessly with Somatic Experiencing.
I provide Body/Mind/Spirit Trauma Resolution tx that facilitates emotional & physiological healing, empowering clients to learn self compassion as they rewrite their life narrative. We often move through our old stories that influence our present. As an experienced practitioner of Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Psychodrama, I use body based action methods to bring clients into the heart of their stories. SE brings awareness to the connection between sensations and affect to free up the tangles in the nervous system caused by traumatic events that can result in living out of alignment with our true nature.

Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-oriented approach for cumulative stress and trauma has increased my understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of stress and trauma, and our innate ability to heal from it.
I work relationally and collaboratively with clients to identify and move beyond limitations and challenges, be it patterns in behavior, relationships or communication that may be barriers to a more authentic self. I believe intrinsic to this process is the discovery/strengthening of inner resources to increase mind/body resilience. I integrate components of psychodynamic/cognitive behavior therapies. Mindfulness is an integral part of my approach. I am interested in incorporating the body’s wisdom into therapy, particularly how it intersects with spiritual/psychological awareness that fosters healing/personal growth.

I am trained in Somatic Experiencing (the work of Dr.
Negative or traumatic experiences from the past get encoded in our bodies. When these neurons get triggered, our positive present mindset gets blasted by echoes of past fear. Old, stuck anxiety shape-shifts into not-great coping habits. Old, stuck depression whispers that it's dumb to future plan, unsafe to dream. Since this embodied stress speaks "sensation" , the language of the body, verbal therapy alone can't help our bodies know that the past is really, truly in the past. So we project our fear into the future. Pass it down to our kids. Spread it out into the world. I work with people who would like to be done with all that.

I use a unique, dynamic approach to traditional talk therapy informed by Gestalt theory and guided by somatic awareness, honest inquiry and deep compassion.
I believe in our capacity to challenge and navigate away from unhealthy patterns. I support my clients in cultivating awareness and guide them in the healing process by drawing on innate strengths and resilience. I encourage clients to think of human beings as organisms, of body and of mind, that live in relationship with others and with our environment. As such, growth is our natural state. We are meant to grow, to act fluidly and adapt creatively throughout our lives and we suffer when that process is blocked or interrupted. However, our suffering can provide an opportunity to grow in new and exciting ways.

Trained in a somatic approach to psychotherapy, I work with trauma and the impact painful life experiences have on one’s ability to connect with others, engage more fully in their chosen pursuits and find greater levels of inner peace. I have come to understand that we can’t be fully in the present or move towards the future if we are caught in the traumatic energy of the past. While suffering is part of the human condition, we hold within the very structures of our brains and the core of our regulatory systems the means to survive devastating life experiences as well as the capacity for growth and change.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
