My practice combines traditional psychotherapy and chakra-based techniques to reach specific goals, stimulate change and growth, and heal memories and experiences. This mind-body approach can be thought of as nature's mind-healing mechanism and all types of clients (not just holistically-oriented) take to it readily. It is effective with most issues - work and relationship difficulties, finding direction in life and most disorders especially addictions, anxiety, and depression. I focus on developing intuition, becoming grounded and productive, expressing creativity and personal power, and connecting to self and other.

I'm a trans, queer, Mexican-American therapist who works from an attuned, responsive, and relationship oriented approach. As all of us have a tendency to get lost in a narrative or storyline, I invite clients to slow down with me and get intimate with their direct experience—the raging emotions in the body, the coming and going of thoughts, the feeling of shaky vulnerability, the rage, the loneliness—honoring it all and creating a safe holding space for these lost emotions, perhaps for the first time ever. In addition to psychotherapy, I offer end-of-life support, and coaching.

In psychotherapy, the ground of being is typically taken to be the self (or ego), and the work of psychotherapy entails mending the fractured self, so that the self is more unified, whole, and complete. This is what we commonly call self-acceptance--acceptance of all the parts of our self, especially the more vulnerable and hurting parts we instinctively reject and ignore. Paradoxically, our suffering decreases when we are able to engage in the difficult practice of allowing vulnerable and hurting parts in, practicing holding them, and possibly relaxing, before we take our next step. Traditional psychotherapy tends to reach its limits here.

I help people feel better and improve their lives with psychotherapy and music therapy. If you are suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction or everyday stress with relationships, work or family. If you want a fluid and creative approach to therapy that helps you go deep to the core of your issues, I can help. I am particularly passionate about working with those who identify as LGBTQIA+, especially trans and GNC folx. In a world full of stigma, with so much pressure to conform to a heteronormative society, being trans or GNC can be an isolating and scary experience. I can help you on your journey to become your true self.

How many times have you said to yourself, "I've got to stop doing this"? And then you do it again. I know because I've worked with hundreds of people, individually and in groups, who have said the same thing. But together we have found a way to get them unstuck and onto a path of increased self-esteem and happiness. Whether the issue is putting unhealthy food in your body or not effectively communicating, I'm here to help you identify the patterns that are keeping you stuck so that you can take charge of your life.

I treat issues of mood and anxiety as well as more complex issues involving substance use and trauma. I also have special expertise in personal goal-setting; cannabis dependence; and creative, gifted, and/or talented youth and adults with mood, underachievement, or multipotentiality issues. I work from a harm-reduction perspective and use a holistic lens to address problems. Using a mix of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and a systems view, I assess and address sleep hygiene, daily habits, personal relationships, and coping skills, and incorporate mindfulness and exercise into all treatment planning.

Do you feel undeserving of your best life? Or carry a burden of shame from abuse as a child, and need help learning to love yourself? Therapy provides a healing path, and I will walk it with you. As kids we learn reading and math yet not how to handle troubling feelings of fear, sadness, anger, and shame. Psychotherapy teaches you how to love yourself. Relief comes as you drop harsh self-judgments that block moving from where you are now to where you want to be. You learn to discriminate between destructive self-criticism and positive self-correction.

Therapy works, and people can change. In my practice people stop acting like marionettes dangling on invisible ropes and feeling "out of control" or stuck in repetitive, unproductive destructive motions. Together, we rewrite your story and free you to choose new, productive, more authentic and organic behaviors. You will figure out what you really want and how to get it. You will also learn that you can't get a quick fix. It took you many years to "create" yourself the way you are, and you need to acknowledge and respect this creatively devised mechanism.

There’s a reason why you’re here, now, searching for something. Maybe you’re looking for answers, or maybe there’s a sense that for whatever reason life has become unmanageable. As your therapist, I will work collaboratively with you to identify and achieve your goals. I believe that within each of us lives an innate drive towards wholeness and transformation. Through cultivating greater self-awareness and acceptance, we can make sense of the patterns/behaviors we want to change in order to live life more fully and authentically.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
