I understand that a person is more than a compilation of symptoms, and take into account a person’s history, current life experience and future goals to provide comprehensive treatment. I focus on issues relating to depression, role transitions and self-esteem. I provide a mostly psychodynamic approach to therapy, which allows a person to gain insight into their life experience. I believe psychotherapy is not a passive experience, and requires active participation by you. I am here to guide and help you realize your potential to live a more fulfilling life.

Have you been feeling anxious, depressed, isolated, stressed? Do you repeatedly engage in behaviors or relationships that don't help and may be harmful and find you can't stop? Whether these feelings & behaviors have been present for a long time or seemed to develop suddenly, it can be hard to figure out the cause or how to find relief. Sometimes distress is caused by prior trauma or by the coping skills developed early in life that are no longer effective or helpful. Personal growth, relief from emotional pain and discomfort, better relationships, and living a more fulfilled life are all possible.

My main goal as a therapist is to provide an emotionally safe and therapeutic atmosphere for my clients. I’ve worked with individuals across the life span and have found that my work has been most impactful with people aged preteen through young adulthood. This time is full of so much change - internally and externally. Initiating therapy can be hard. With a mixture of empathy, support, and reflection, solutions will be developed together, helping to give you a life that is more fulfilled.

Your life is in transition, you are trying to hold it together on the outside, while inside you are falling apart. You feel like you have to live up to someone else's expectations or ideals and no matter what you do, it feels like you are failing. You feel added pressures to be everything to everyone: a perfect partner, parent, friend, or employee, and this pressure can feel daunting.

As a Bronx native, my commitment to supporting the wellness of underserved groups stems from my roots. The BIPOC community often faces disparities within our healthcare system and I am committed to providing quality, culturally competent care to survivors of trauma, race-based traumatic stress, those seeking to change generational patterns, those struggling to manage worries, fears and frustrations or those seeking self-awareness into their behavior patterns. My journey began as a NYC educator, where I developed a keen understanding of human learning and development and I continue to also support adolescence and fellow parents.

You are not broken, you do not need to be fixed, and you are enough. The circumstances you have faced and symptoms you experience are very real, but they do not define you. I strongly believe we as humans are resilient and capable of healing ourselves when we actively choose to. Through my years of working with survivors of trauma, I have found many symptoms, habits, and reactions to simply be adaptions; Ways in which the nervous system learned to cope with unsafe, chaotic, and/or unpredictable environments.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
