My goal as a counselor is to provide clients with a safe space to share their concerns, struggles, and difficulties, and work towards goals of happiness, stability, and serenity. A main focus of my work is to help each client to achieve a connection between mind, body, and soul; to reach a sense and feeling of peace in the present moment. Sometimes, this includes healing wounds of the past. I firmly believe in meeting the client where they are at, and working together, step-by-step, on moving forward.

My approach to treatment is to focus on the person and where they are currently struggling. It is important for everyone to have an outlet and a way to engage in daily self care and coping skills. Recognizing triggers and building boundaries are essential for our wellness. I understand that deciding to come to therapy is a huge decision and a choice that is not always easy.

Having a special interest in eating disorder treatment and related conditions my clients often have difficulty with issues of mood (especially anxiety and depression), lack of self-identity, fears of judgement and being alone, a craving for connection, a sense of not being understood, concerns about the future, and at times even self-hatred. The mental state of these types of conditions lead to an overwhelming, all-consuming thought process that is usually obsessional and demeaning. The goal of any patient is to learn how to rid fears, quiet intrusive thoughts and find a way to a more fulfilling life with some sense of inner peace.

Hello, my name is Marie St. Louis. I have spent most of my life helping people be the best versions of themselves, in one capacity or another. As a licensed counselor, I have several years of professional experience helping adults successfully navigate a variety of mental health challenges (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, addiction, loss, relationship conflicts, anger, and other life-controlling issues). I collaborate with clients to develop treatment goals, and explore practical and effective coping strategies to help achieve these goals. This leads to a more robust life that reflects the client's core values.

I believe that there are different pathways to helping clients reach their established goals. My primary focus is to establish a strong and empathic therapeutic relationship, as well as a secure base to help you navigate the journey of exploring and working through the root cause of your pain or presenting symptoms. As a psychotherapist, I have experience working with individuals, adolescents, and families with histories of severe emotional disorders, complex trauma, depression and anxiety.

When I was Dean of Student Services at a school for teens at risk for drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy, and other self-destructive behaviors, I recognized that many of these teens were depressed, anxious, or suffering from traumatic experiences. In 2008, I earned my degree in social work from Adelphi University and most recently, I completed the three year Child Adolescent Training Psychotherapy Program at the William Alanson White Institute. My training in early emotional development is the foundation for my work with people of all ages.
