Recently I have developed a professional focus on the interface of obesity, diabetes, & depression.
My practice is informed by my firm conviction in the possibility of change, founded in extensive personal & professional experience. I employ an eclectic approach in therapy, with a primary focus on interpersonal, psychodynamic treatment. I have successfully worked with people struggling with many of life's central challenges: identity, relationships, depression, & self-defeating or self-destructive behaviors. I have particular expertise in working with people affected by alcoholism/addiction: not only those who have substance abuse problems, but also the partners or adult children of alcoholics/addicts & people in long-term recovery.

I assist in helping each individual work through whatever may have brought them into therapy so that they can find their own internal potential and ability to better cope with stressful situations. I specialize in working with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety and panic related disorders, PTSD, relationship struggles, bereavement, and work related issues. I believe that therapy offers the individual a safe space to share their struggles and work on ways to resolve these difficulties with the support and assistance of the therapist.

These are challenging fast-moving times. The demands from family, career, social and romantic relationships can feel overwhelming and unmanageable. How do we find the time to excel in our professional lives and simultaneously make room for healthy loving connections with those that are important to us? How do we manage our anxiety, sadness, and grief in real-time when we are feeling angry, confused, isolated, and perhaps abusing alcohol, drugs to numb the overwhelming sense of fear, depression, or frustration we feel in our lives? How do we live our best lives and gravitate toward healthier connections and decision making?

I believe that the choice to start talk therapy is a brave and empowering one, a moment where you are choosing to invest some time to learn more about who you are and where you've come from - knowledge you can use to improve your life. It doesn't matter if you are dissatisfied with your personal and/or professional relationships, struggling to identify your life goals, pondering the meaning of life, or stuck in what feels like an endlessly repeating loop of challenges -- knowledge is power.

Nice to meet you! I'm Stoop, a White, queer, anti-racist community-organizer who's committed to collective liberation and generational healing. I will support you finding your way through the places you get stuck, and tapping into your most authentic self. We will explore pain points, identify root causes, and build foundations of recovery on visions of humanity. First things first; we'll dig into areas of powerlessness and define integrity, so that you can begin to root into a source of power that is bigger than us all.

You are whole. You are worthy. You are welcome here. Sometimes life feels overwhelming, scary, and messy. You don't have to walk through the fire alone. There can be no change without awareness. I view therapy as a tool for just that: increased understanding of our inner and outer worlds. I use a variety of therapies to guide exploration and confront the realities that inform you and that may be holding you back. With compassion and great care for safety, we’ll continue to uncover your personal strengths that equip you with the self-confidence to navigate your life and relationships.

You are about to take your first step forward toward growth, change and improving the quality of your life. Your decision to start therapy is a commitment to yourself. By exploring both the past and the present, you will recognize life patterns and dynamics which affect your relationships, career, and overall emotional and physical well-being. I believe each person is unique and do not utilize a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, we will work collaboratively to create a safe, supportive environment that encourages honesty, authenticity, connection and directness. Together we establish the direction and pace of our work.

I am confident that my clients can discover their own solutions to the conflicts and anxieties that bring them to therapy. I believe that people want to be heard by a professional who will help them develop new perspectives on themselves and their relationships, and who will assist them in finding creative ways to handle the anguish that daily living involves. I am exploratory and active and make interventions within the context of each person's historical narrative. I provide interventions and referrals when necessary.

Obesity Therapists

Can obesity be a cause of depression and anxiety?

Yes. It can be stressful and debilitating to carry excess weight. Many people make inaccurate assumptions about people who are overweight. This stigma may lead individuals to feel badly about themselves, decreasing their self-esteem, or leading to feelings of worthlessness. An association between obesity and depression is well-established.

When should an individual seek treatment for obesity?

When obesity, or the feelings it causes, creates a disruption in your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Examples include avoiding social situations due to anxiety, an inability to participate in family life as a result of health problems, or poor performance at work due to low self-esteem or other concerns.

Are there specific medications for weight loss?

There are several prescription drugs that can help with weight loss, including semaglutide and phentermine. These drugs reduce appetite and must be prescribed by a physician. Professionals will suggest lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, before turning to drugs, which have side effects and typically are prescribed only for a short duration. Many people regain weight after taking weight loss drugs if they have not made significant lifestyle changes.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is a cultural movement that promotes the acceptance of bodies of all sizes and types, rather than those that conform to societal ideals of beauty. It places self-worth, self-acceptance, and an appreciation for one’s body as goals to achieve a happier, healthier attitude about oneself and others, focusing on who a person is rather than what they look like.
