Hello, I am a CJC, LCADC, LCSW with 21 years of practice. I work with Spanish speaking and English speaking clients that have (and have had) negative consequences associated with their substance use/abuse. We will work together to help resolve the current and underlying problem.

I am a bilingual licensed clinical social worker with a private practice in East Windsor, NJ. I conduct therapy sessions in English and Spanish. Specializing in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, my focus here is twofold: childhood sexual abuse (victims and nonoffending parents) and eating/weight problems. I also work with individuals who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, family issues, stage of life issues, and sexuality issues. I work with people of all ages: children (6-12), preteens (11-13), adolescents/teenagers (14-19), adults (20 and older), and older adults (65 and older).

Taharka Sankara holds a Masters of Social Work degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is licensed in the State of New Jersey in the fields of Social Work and Alcohol and Drug Counseling. Counseling experience spans across various treatment modalities with diverse populations. Many years spent counseling adolescent and adult males with addictive and criminal behaviors in individual, group and family sessions to address the underlying issues of trauma, substance abuse and other co-occurring behavior and mental health disorders. He works primarily from a solution-focused, strengths-based, client-centered framework.

Throughout my Career as a Social Worker I have had the opportunity to work with many different populations, It has been a privilege to hone my skills with different clients from all walks of life. My speciality areas include domestic violence, mental health and adults with developmental disabilities. I obtained my MSW from Rutgers in 2015 and am currently a doctoral student at Capella university, where I am researching holistic services for adults with a dual diagnosis of mental health and developmental disabilities.

My desire is to serve client’s who struggle with substance abuse. This is my speciality and there are many issues that surround substance abuse e.g. issues of self esteem, self worth, family of origin issues, traumas physical mental and sexual. There are also issues of neglect, abandonment and disconnection/dissociation from the self and from the inner child. In addition to my expertise in these areas I also counsel client’s for domestic violence, anger management, anxiety, depression and grief and loss. I believe that client’s need to have the ability to talk about these issues in a safe and nurturing environment.

I have many years of successful counseling experience working with adolescent and adult clients in the areas of: Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Dual Diagnosis, Depression and Anxiety, Stress and Transition, Impulse Control Disorders and Domestic Violence which includes working with individuals that struggle with Anger and Rage Issues. I work with individuals who often have additional, legal, occupational or school related involvement. I am both a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

I works primarily with individuals ages 13 and over facing challenges related to depression, anxiety/panic disorder, mood and personality disorders, interpersonal problems, self esteem, PTSD, trauma, grief, life transition, adjustment issues, stress management and substance abuse.

People are helped most by considering all aspects of their lives, their strengths as well as the areas giving them problems. Therefore, I will treat you as a whole person, not just as a diagnosis. We will work together to understand how your past is affecting your current situation, and get to the bottom of your issues, for achieving deep, lasting changes. Speaking freely and without inhibitions with your therapist is essential and I work to provide a warm, safe environment for you to do so. I also offer group therapy, which is very effective when combined with individual sessions.

I have extensive experience helping individuals with severe psychological trauma, grief & loss, eating disorders, sexual abuse and all aspects of substance abuse including the impact on family life. I also treat individuals with depression & anxiety. I have worked individually and in groups for the past 30 years. In addition, I have worked with couples and families.
