I use an integrated approach to psychotherapy, grounded in Person Centered (Rogerian) Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, but drawing on different disciplines such as DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and a Psychoanalytic approach when appropriate.
I am dually licensed as an LPC and LCADC. The path I took to become a therapist was a long and winding one which provided me with a rich diversity of experience to draw from in my work. I understand that change is difficult. I received a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Montana in Missoula, where I also began my study of Zen, and eventually spent over 20 years as an Information Technology professional. I have been married for over 30 years and, together with my wife, have raised two sons who are now young adults.

It can be overwhelming when you know something in your life needs to change, but you don't know exactly what it is, how to get started, or who can help you take action. Losing hope can happen when you are stuck in the repeating cycle of destructive actions, negative thoughts, or painful emotions that don't seem to show any signs of improvement.

A seasoned therapist, I draw upon my extensive post graduate training in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, group therapy, trauma-informed therapy, 12-step, harm reduction and other recovery models, attachment-based theory, mindfulness and Gottman’s evidence-based approach to couples therapy.
At times we find ourselves at a difficult crossroad, uncertain how to grow and change in the face of our distress. With 35 years in private practice, my goal is to help individuals and couples find a path to unknot conflicts and develop more resilient and expansive modes of living. Many of the people I work with are embroiled in addictive behaviors such as alcohol and substance misuse, gambling, sex addiction and pornography. Others struggle with painful traumatic personal histories, chronic and acute illnesses, grief and loss. And still others are mired in destructive relationship patterns that undermine the quality of their lives.

My therapeutic approach is informed by psychodynamic and attachment theories, current developments in neuroscience and psychotherapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral interventions.
Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for several things, including: relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress; healing from past and present hurts and abuses; and personal growth and change. I work with difficulties that people experience currently, as well as issues that have their origins in the past, but continue to color one's experiences. I work so that the therapy session is a safe place for you to express yourself, including things that are difficult and troubling, as well as a place for greater self understanding and for learning the skills that will lead to change and greater happiness for you.

Work. Family. Friends. Why can't life be simpler? With multiple deadlines, a growing to-do list, and a family and social life that demands attention. You know that you can be successful, but you're beginning to think that you are dropping too many balls. The constant pressure to perform is turning into unrelenting anxiety and your performance is suffering. Therapy sounds like it might be a good idea, but no way can you dedicate seasons or years to making things better. Your work cannot wait, your spouse/lover cannot wait, you cannot wait. Efficiency is critical. Confidentiality is critical. But you're ready to do what it takes.

Have you been feeling your life is lacking purpose or that you're disconnected from your true self? This can be confusing and isolating. My passion is helping people move from a reactive state to living a fuller, authentic life in which they're the main character of their story. I believe it's our responsibility to define our own meaning in life. Finding meaning is an interpretive act. We make meaning through telling stories about our lives. Language does not just capture and reflect experience, but also creates it. My job as a therapist is to support you in crafting your story of self, so that you move from surviving to thriving.

I do my best work with male clientele. Most of my clients are comprised of teenagers and college-aged males. My efficacy, particularly with adolescents, has its genesis in my sincerity, non-judgmental manner, knowledge of technology and disarming sense of humor. It is not uncommon to hear from parents, “we have taken our son to three other therapists and you are the only one he will talk to.” I also work well with college-aged males who have difficulty transitioning from high school to young adulthood. I have also worked with veterans and members of law enforcement; trust is paramount in my relationships with all my clients.

My ideal clients are people who have been unable to find someone they can pull back the veil covering their heart because of past betrayals, lack of trust, cultural roadblocks, or some other barrier that keeps the true source of their burden hidden. You are looking for a space where you can be honest, not with me, but with yourself. You're looking for someone who can listen without judgment and accompany you on your healing journey. You are seeking someone to either walk with you through your journey and hold you accountable for the goals you set for yourself or for someone who can simply listen with an open mind.

My approach to therapy is collaborative in nature. Rather than me being the expert and you the client, the approach provided assumes dual expertise between us. That is, I work with you to build a relationship, provide a comfortable atmosphere and then we (as a team) decide what the treatment plan will be. Only you can decide what's important and, what you are willing and ready to do. My job is to work with you from a holistic approach and accentuate your strengths, affirm your innate abilities and evoke and assist change if indicated.

In my 19 years as a therapist, I have worked with a range of clients, such as co-dependency, anger, OCD, phobias, panic disorders, and PTSD & trauma with individuals, couples, and families, and I have learned every client is vastly different. One thing that is the same is that the goal for the client is always moving towards living kind of the life they want to live. What that looks like is different for everyone because we all have our own set of values. But the stronger our values, the harder it can be to accept ourselves and others in the world. I help clients find that balance for themselves!

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
