I use a combination of modalities, but primarily DBT and EMDR. DBT teaches the skills you need to manage and embrace your emotions. EMDR is a tool to move through the hurts of the past and step into your life in the present. Together, these tools will assist you to develop a life worth living and leave the past behind.

Because I work with survivors of pervasive trauma, progress is difficult to predict. Most people see some improvement in symptoms within 4-8 sessions; others may take longer. Early progress includes increased efficiency in coping skills, as well as decreased emotional reactivity. Longer-term progress includes decreased frequency of re-experiencing symptoms and increased memory integration.

I use a Motivational Interviewing framework for almost all care, focused on respecting your preferences and values. For management of symptoms, I prefer the coping skills from the DBT Skills Training Manual, as well as a few tricks I have learned from my clients. Once skills are in place, I use EMDR and Ego-State therapy to reprocess traumatic memory and increase flexibility of thinking.

Coping With Trauma Related Dissociation follows the book by the same name written by Boon, Steele, and Van Der Hart. We are learning skills for managing dissociative and trauma-related symptoms. From the back cover of the book: "readers have a compassionate, readable roadmap to understanding dissociation... and developing lifelong skills." The group starts with mindfulness and homework review, and then a discussion of the chapter for next week. Participants will have weekly reading and daily homework assignments.
