Sometimes, life can be extremely difficult and feel out of control. Many of us have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness, but I believe that we need to challenge that thought. The ability to be vulnerable, to say we are not okay and to reach out for support, is the bravest step we can take. I have personally witnessed individuals who had experienced years of trauma, addiction and mental health challenges create meaningful lives that brought them a sense of joy and peace. They found a new sense of purpose and created the healthy loving relationships. They realized the laughter they heard was once again their own.

I work with adults seeking to change their lives. I have considerable experience helping people alleviate anxiety and depression, as well as, other mood disorders. I find creative ways to help people heal from trauma they have experienced and to connect with the present. I enjoy helping people who need help to tackle substance use issues such as alcohol or other drugs. I also work with couples using EFT to rebuild the bond between partners and create a healthier relationship with emotions.

You are not alone! Many folks today are feeling stuck... or overwhelmed by anxiety, loss, and confusion. Others are trying to make meaning of early life events or current relational strife with partners, children, or parents. I enjoy working with a variety of populations including: helping parents navigate difficulties with children who are struggling with anxiety or possible neurodivergence, adolescents struggling to belong or with unhealthy coping skills, young adults balancing college and work, adults navigating transitions such as divorce, retirement, and grief, and those who are in recovery.

My ideal client is one who is interested in finding happiness in love, work and community. My reward during my 30 years in practice is to experience, with individuals and couples, their growth towards these goals. Years in private practice and a major medical setting in New York have given me a broad background in helping people cope with the many challenges life hands them and to help them regain their feelings of hope. Additional focus is placed on life transitions including divorce, retirement, and bereavement. Additionally, I offer guidance in helping your children and teens navigate those challenging years.

Many of us struggle with patterns of distressing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. I believe it is not what is wrong with you, but what has happened to you that causes emotional difficulty in life. If you are a human being alive today, then you have experienced some type of trauma or ongoing stress that therapy can help address. I work with adults 18+ struggling with any of the symptoms caused by trauma or chronic stress. These symptoms may include depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, insomnia, chronic pain or health conditions, difficulty in relationships or parenting, and addictive behaviors to name a few.

I work with individuals, couples, and other relational systems to clarify purpose and priorities. I seek to help clients learn the skills that support what is most important to them, instead of the defaults that got wired in through past experiences. My work is presence focused, with meditation, mindfulness and somatic awareness as important practices. My hope for clients is that their brains and nervous systems can be rewired away from trauma responses and towards having the capacity for the way of experiencing life they desire.

Hi there! My name is Briana and I am here to support you through various challenges and transitions. We can oftentimes feel frustrated, stuck, or anxious - whether this be as a spouse, parent, employee, or just feeling overwhelmed as a human in general. We can all experience getting to a place where we feel completely numb & just trying to survive. You might feel like a hamster running on its wheel, feeling completely stuck and going nowhere, unsure of what to do differently. Maybe you're trying to heal on your own from the things that you never talk about, and are in need of someone who can listen & validate your emotions.

Each sub perfect evaluation score and missed promotion is a shard of glass straight through your heart. They remind you of the ever present game of catch up standing between you and the success you know is within you, just like it has stood between you and the acceptance of every role model you have ever had. Your hesitance to share insights during work meetings for fear of rejection so often on the heels of similar risks you took, leaves you feeling purposeless and helpless the rest of the day and even into your family, yoga, and sleep time.

There is a lot of pressure in today’s world to feel good, to handle our troubles on our own. We are led to believe that the signs of health and success are the absence of struggle, that we are weak if we reach out for help. And yet we all struggle to some degree. If struggle is a part of life, then I believe we must also contain the potential to struggle well. Struggling takes strength and courage. If you are reading this, you have already made your first step towards choosing to struggle well.

I have many years of experience helping adolescents, young adults, adults, families and parents function more effectively in their relationships and in the world. Rather than focus on diagnoses or symptoms, I prefer to see a client as whole person and to help them unearth the roots of their patterns. It takes bravery, commitment, and compassion to face our pain and transform our relationship to it. By letting go of past emotional burdens, we can then work to change the behaviors that result from them. I am committed to creating a strong working relationship with my clients, which is a precursor to successful therapeutic outcomes.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Haywood County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
