Sometimes, life can be extremely difficult and feel out of control. Many of us have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness, but I believe that we need to challenge that thought. The ability to be vulnerable, to say we are not okay and to reach out for support, is the bravest step we can take. I have personally witnessed individuals who had experienced years of trauma, addiction and mental health challenges create meaningful lives that brought them a sense of joy and peace. They found a new sense of purpose and created the healthy loving relationships. They realized the laughter they heard was once again their own.
Often, clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed with the challenges they are facing and find it difficult to explain what they are experiencing. I believe it is my role is to truly listen to my clients, assist them in figuring out their own goals and create a plan to achieve them incoporating evidence-based skills from therapies like CBT and DBT.
