I support minoritized individuals as they navigate workplace discrimination and microaggressions, helping them cope and advocate for themselves effectively. My clients are often managing major life transitions such as job loss, divorce, blending families, or raising a neurodivergent child. I also provide specialized care for aging-related issues, including retirement and legacy planning, dementia, and age-related depression and anxiety. My clients seek to rebuild and redefine their lives after significant changes, striving for resilience, empowerment, and renewed purpose.

I specialize in working with older adults, people with chronic illness, and caregivers. I help people who are struggling with coming to terms with an illness or disability, managing the stresses of life with these conditions, or dealing with emotional distress near the end of life. As a clinical social worker, I have 10 years of experience working in the healthcare field, primarily with older adults, and was inspired to start my practice by seeing the need for more support for this population. I also work with the general adult population on issues such as depression, anxiety, adjustment, OCD, and sexually diverse identities.

My patients often feel like they've tried everything and still haven’t found relief. That takes a toll. My specialty as a health psychologist focuses on chronic pain management, helping people manage the severity of their pain along with the frustration, sadness, exhaustion, and grief that come along with chronic pain. When it comes to managing pain, having a therapist who specializes in pain matters. I find fulfillment in helping patients like you achieve better quality of life, achieve lasting health improvements, and reach personal goals that otherwise couldn't be met.

The first steps to a counseling session can be scary, but it is also a courageous act in understanding yourself and living a more engaging life. My philosophy in providing care has always been "helping others help themselves." I believe that each individual has the ability to change and grow in their journey. In sessions I provide a safe, compassionate, and collaborative space. I will also acknowledge that our world is vastly different and more chaotic than it was a few years ago - covid pandemic, racial injustice, climate change - and I will do my best to offer you some direction in these collective struggles.

Hi, I'm April and I'm here to work with you. The past few years have shown us that we all have times when we may need someone to talk to. We can no longer sit on thoughts without a safe space to share and work through them. I help those who want to be a better version of themselves.

It is an exciting time of awakening to the unique magnificent being of Love, Peace, and Joy you are....whole and total...not separate from anyone or anything. It in only believing in thoughts, judgments, especially negative ones, that cloud your seeing this. I would love to support you in: 1) learning how not to believe negative thoughts, rather observe and see through them and challenge them:2) when you do identify with them resulting in fear, pain, anger, or sadness how to directly experience them in your heart or body without story so they dissolve. 3) discover you are what you are looking for and have all the answers within.

Choosing to engage in therapy is a courageous choice (even when it doesn’t feel that way). In working with children, teens, and adults, I have appreciated and valued the concept of healing the whole person on all levels - body, mind, and spirit. I feel it also important to acknowledge systems that have impacted your life, am socially conscious in my work with clients— all identities, cultures, and types of relationships are welcome.

With all of the challenges that life can throw at us, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or helpless. Life satisfaction and happiness might seem like distant goals with no clear path forward to reach them. You may find that you are spending more and more time stuck in your own head, perseverating on your struggles and acting as your own harshest critic. To me, therapy rooted in compassion and empathy can be a fantastic tool for navigating these challenges and discovering meaning and self-empowerment.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
