I do therapy backwards. I help people first find
acceptance
of what's challenging them, and focus on making that feeling of discomfort feel safe. I believe that allowing the experience of the full range of human emotions is key to reclaiming and strengthening our emotional resiliency. We can accept the presence of discomfort and feel joy, while identifying and making changes based on who we want to be or know we are. My therapy practice is based in an understanding of the nervous system, mindfulness, and the ways we all experience and react to trauma and distress.

I am currently accepting new patients. What do you need right now? It can be hard to identify our feelings and to sit with our emotions. It can be challenging to move forward when we feel trapped by our past.

Learning to live in present moment awareness empowers you to embrace all of your life in each unfolding moment with greater
acceptance
, aliveness, and peace.
Beneath all of our disappointments, losses, and heartbreaks, we all want to be valued for who we are, accepted for how we feel, and respected for what we think. I will encourage you to cultivate present moment awareness and self-compassion for the painful difficulties, challenging life circumstances, and to the inner narrative that keeps you stuck in habitual patterns of reacting. While fear and doubt may obscure your perspective, we will work together to help you develop strength-based skills and capacities for moving through challenges. I will help you access your inner wisdom for cultivating trust, balance, clarity, & connection.

Together we will draw on theories that make the most sense to you and your goals whether that’s mindfulness, harm reduction, anti-oppressive theories,
Acceptance
and Commitment therapy, and/or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I believe we all need connection, kindness, and a non-judgmental space to show up in all our complexity. Many people look to therapy because we want something to be different: our moods, health, relationships with ourselves, others, and/or substances. Perhaps you’re looking to therapy because you need a little extra support in getting by, navigating a change like pregnancy or gender transition, or a loss. I believe change, growth, and fulfillment can happen when we feel seen and affirmed. As a therapist, I am collaborative, curious, thoughtful, eclectic. Above all, I trust you as the best expert in your own life.

Let’s face it, life has a tendency to wear us all down--be it the death of a loved one, illness, traumatic experiences, or even just the demands of everyday life. As a result, we might find ourselves plagued by chronic stress, anxiety, or depression. Perhaps you find yourself feeling hopeless, trapped, or isolated. Maybe you’ve felt as though you've been merely surviving life, instead of actually living it. If so, know that you are not alone, and change is possible! I’m extremely passionate and dedicated to helping my clients heal, improve their lives, and reach their personal goals.

As you encounter life and its many hurdles, you can be presented with challenging situations, transitions in life, and unforeseen circumstances. If you are struggling with the weight of anxiety, depression, burnout, or traumatic memories, it can be helpful to have the space and a person at your side to walk with you in navigating these challenges. Some of my specific clinical interests include processing and healing from religious-based trauma and coming out as LGBTQIA. I also identify as a member of the LGBTQIA community and I am licensed in both Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
