I provide art therapy, psychotherapy, and trauma therapy. Services are personalized in a compassionate supportive environment that encourages curiosity. Art-making is always optional, I also integrate sensory-based approaches and talk therapy informed by the wisdom of the body. These engage the parts of the brain that develop pre-verbally. Sessions include choices and collaboration for you to co-create the best fit for your needs. We all get stuck sometimes. When clients are stuck, I offer a couple of paths or ways to begin. Sessions occur at my art studio located at the new Compass Art Center in downtown Kensginton.

Welcome! I'm Dr. Jan, a compassionate Harvard-educated psychologist with many years of experience in the integration and healing of mind, body, and spirit. Whether we meet online or in person, my goal is to create a safe nurturing space for you to embark on a journey of discovery, self-awareness, and transformation. In my practice, I offer support to individuals of all ages navigating life's many challenges: to better manage anxiety, stress, and depression related to medical conditions, life transitions, loss, everyday struggles as well as trauma. Many people come to me specifically to pursue personal and spiritual growth.

You see your child struggle and you don't know how to help. You hoped that this was just a phase that they would grow out of but you can't ignore the "red flags" you continue to see. You desperately want to fix things for them, but what you have tried isn't working. You're starting to realize that figuring it out on your own isn't the solution. You want help, but you're worried about judgment and labels.

The decision to seek out a therapist is an important first step towards positively addressing conflicts, managing distress, and learning to cope with negative or overwhelming feelings. Our team of therapists bring years of therapy experience. We work with children, adolescents, adults, and families who are Deaf or come from Deaf families (includes hearing family/friends who sign). We provide a supportive, nurturing environment. We use a multimodal approach incorporating mind-body therapies with evidence-based treatments. We also offer forensic-clinical services and applied behavior analysis treatment.

The mere thought of therapy can be daunting, while in actuality most of us ask for advice from those around us everyday. What makes therapy different from asking a coworker, friend or relative for their advice, is my approach to therapy. I believe therapy is allowing you the space to work out issues, the space to feel free and learn about yourself in new ways. Therapy is looking at your thoughts and behavioral patterns for maximum effectiveness to your desired goals. My approach is best summed up in a quote by Benjamin Franklin, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.”

I have extensive experience working with kids, adolescents, and families and use a strengths based approach to meet children where they are. You can show up now and be seen, known, and valued at our new office. As a former school counselor, I know that children have varying school experiences and show up with you to build community, partner with you, and to meet each child where they are. As a holistic trauma therapist, I help you—or your child—move from overwhelm and anxiety to navigating life with confidence, ease, and joy. I seek to help you see your innate wisdom so that you can create goals, remember dreams, and find a deep, abiding sense of contentment within yourself. Many clients I work with were told they were "too sensitive" or "overdramatic" as a child. I am skilled at guiding you reconnect with younger parts of yourself and shift unhelpful core beliefs. My areas of expertise include anxiety, trauma, ADHD, and existential dread. I am licensed in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Do you have an eating disorder, or complicated feelings about food? I work with people who have yo-yo-dieting, emotional eating, exercise addiction and eating disorders to find peace and freedom. My approach is direct but supportive with a good dose of humor. I offer highly individualized therapy in that I integrate approaches from CBT, ACT and mindfulness practice based upon the needs of the client.

I believe one of the most healing things we can do is understand our stories and how it affects our everyday life and relationships.
