I work with preteens, teens, and adults. I specialize in depression, anxiety, and trauma related disorders. Together, we discover how your attachment pattern has influenced your behavior, thoughts, and emotional security. I believe in holding the therapeutic space as a method for responsibility, transparency, and creating life solutions. In addition to talk therapy, I also use art therapy as a therapeutic modality for interested individuals. Art therapy is a non-verbal therapeutic practice geared toward examining our thoughts and emotions through a creative outlet.

Selecting a therapist is an important decision. I believe that creating an environment where the client feels that the therapist has listened, shown empathy, and has genuine concern are some of the core conditions for a therapeutic relationship. Providing a client with helpful feedback in this safe, empathic environment promotes change and growth. A client that I work with may have a variety of concerns including having a relationship issue, going through a separation, having parenting concerns, experiencing depression, anxiety, or problems related to alcohol or drug misuse or abuse. Please visit my website www.scottholzmanphd.com.

I specialize in working with busy Moms and Single-parents struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, as well as couples (dating, premarital, married) and Black men.
Do you feel life is spiraling out of control? Or you have to be everything to everyone else but feel alone when you’re in need? Are you having trouble meeting expectations? Or saying “No" then resenting saying yes? Do you put everyone before you and then don't have enough time for you or your dreams? Are you feeling “stuck” after giving so much, then to realize you’re not making progress in your life? More often than we realize, we tend to lose ourselves giving what we don’t have while trying to manage it all; parenthood, relationships, careers, and life situations. We then become overwhelmed, anxious, depressed or stuck.

All psychological issues are ultimately existential in origin, entailing a confrontation with death, loss, meaning, purpose and value. All that we do (knowingly or unknowingly) is dedicated to deciphering these daunting and irrepressible demands of existence. Few are successful in resolving or even clearly conceptualizing these existential issues and their minds inevitably descend into despair, depression and anxiety. Some seek to assuage their suffering with psychoactive substances (illicit and licit) and this leads only to addiction and abdication of autonomy over one's authentic self. My System offers a solution.

When treating Depression/Anxiety/Mood disturbances, I help clients change thought processes, mood regulation, anger management & self-esteem.
Rapport is critical for the therapeutic setting; without a positive connection, therapy is a difficult road. Therapists should provide a meaningful experience, which includes a safe place to share. I believe I need to provide a nonjudgmental environment to help healing. My role as a therapist is working with clients to improve their insight, identify triggers, manage life’s dilemmas and help them manage their symptoms. The goal is to help clients identify what is needed, be it, love, joy, peace, self-control, self-image and/or happiness, I meet my clients "right where they are" w/o judgment, but with clinical insight & experience.

The single most important factor in helping children and adolescents heal after experiencing potentially traumatic events is having a supportive and responsive caregiver. This crucial piece of information applies to children and families who have experiences potentially traumatic events, or are struggling with depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, or behavioral/relational difficulties. As a licensed psychologist, I have had the opportunity to work with children, adolescents, and their families who have experienced a wide range of traumatic events. Visit us at brightstarthealth.com.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
