depression
, work-life balance, relationship difficulties, self-care, and parenting.
Congratulations on your decision to seek therapy. You have made a valuable decision to honor your inner needs and feelings. It is my belief that all individuals have a desire to live a meaningful and purposeful life, yet sometimes become "stuck" in unhealthy ways of thinking about themselves and their circumstances. My approach involves the integration of Afrocentric practices, Mindfulness-based practices, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You know yourself best. So, therapy is viewed as a collaborative process where the client and I work together to discover solutions to life's challenges.

Therapy can be an intimidating process. How often have you pushed your mental health aside because life grew hectic; were told to “practice self-care” but aren’t sure what that entails; or been told to “just get over something” and you’re left feeling lost or overwhelmed? Being a human is challenging! We’re filled with complicated emotions that derive from our lived experiences, environment, family dynamics, personality, and genetics. My goal is to help you sort some of that out to relieve
depression
, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict.

Treating mental health issues-from
depression
to eating disorders and more-requires training, experience, and continued commitment in clinical practice.
After working over 24 years in the field of social work, I recognize my energy and desire lies in clinical practice. My particular interests in the last 15 years have also addressed other areas beyond general mental health. This includes clients who struggle with food and eating issues, body image disturbance, and negative self image. In addition, the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic has brought a new appreciation to the importance of therapy, and the recognized need for others to say that they need help.

Are your emotions and moods causing you problems? Perhaps your feelings seem too strong and overwhelming. Or perhaps you lack emotions and you feel empty inside. Maybe you do not know what you are feeling or your emotions confuse you. When you get anxious, bored or stressed do you turn to foods, alcohol, drugs or harmful activities to feel better? Do you lack a sense of meaning or excitement for life? Are you tired of feeling and reacting to the world in the same old ways that just don't seem to be working anymore?

My specialities include working with people that struggle with relational issues, life transitions, anxiety,
depression
, grief & loss, and trauma.
Do you feel stuck? or feel like you are caught on a treadmill, thinking you are going somewhere only to find that you are still in the same place emotionally? You are not alone. My basic premise is that we are each on our own journey, attempting to do the best we can with what we have – and then life’s events happen to us. We can end up feeling entrenched in patterns of behaviors and thinking that are limiting and discouraging. You are NOT destined to remain bound by these cycles forever. My style of psychotherapy is deeply relational incorporating clients' emotions to bring forth experiential change.

Taking the first step by deciding to pursue therapy can be difficult. Living with untreated anxiety or
depression
can be even worse. Most of our lives we are taught to protect ourselves by keeping vulnerabilities hidden and keeping people at a safe distance. Therapy encourages just the opposite: to reveal your innermost thoughts and feelings to a stranger- your therapist. This process can be unsettling. However, by articulating these emotions, putting words to the oftentimes debilitating feelings, life becomes more manageable and healing begins.

I work with young adults and older, who face challenges such as
depression
, anxiety, substance abuse due to physical or emotional pain, as well people with relationship issues and other life struggles.
~Currently only conducting SAP evaluations -No new patients~ Sometimes you need a catalyst to begin moving towards a richer and more meaningful life. Family and friends are not always enough to guide, support and challenge you to see things from a different perspective. It can be hard to know where to start. I have seen the positive life changing effects that therapy has on people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, grief and loss as well as other distressing events, and enjoy working with people towards a healthier and more satisfying life.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
