I specialize in helping men connect to themselves and others with strength, courage, and authenticity. Are you feeling depressed, anxious, or just that life is not all you had hoped? Are your relationships unfulfilling? Having difficulty letting go of past hurts? Using sex, the internet, work, or social media to avoid others or painful emotions? Does it seem impossible to "get through" to your spouse? Retirement not going well? Has the pandemic knocked you off your game? It’s time for a change. “You, he said, are a terribly real thing in a terribly false world, and that, I believe, is why you’re in so much pain" (Autumn).

In addition to the couples work that I do in conjunction with my wife, I also specialize in working with men struggling with a multitude of issues including communication issues, mood disorders, relationship problems, career transitions, and addictions.
Couples therapy has been found to be least effective of all therapies, thus it is important for clients to seek out therapists who are versed in the latest research on couples and marital therapy. The unique couples approach I co-created with my wife, called the Couples Synergy model, has helped thousands of couples internationally for over 25 years.

The therapeutic relationship and the experiences it fosters serves as a type of mirror—it’s a safe space to explore oneself. My role is to hold space, ask pertinent questions, and listen to you completely. My approach is one of collaboration. I might be an "expert" in mental health, but you're the expert of YOU. We'll co-create therapeutic goals, partner together in devising a plan to achieve your goals, and give space for your expansion and evolution.

I have a particular affinity for work with adolescent and adult males on emotional expressiveness, anger management, and social skills.
The late-great David Bowie captured one of life’s most enduring challenges when he dared us to “turn and face the straaange ch-ch-changes.” If only it were that easy, right? I am a change expert with 17+ years of experience helping people contend with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, “I feel stuck”-ness, low self-esteem, and underachievement. My approach is interactive, down-to-earth, and peppered with humor and creativity. Feel free to contact me for a brief, no-charge phone consultation. If I’m not the ideal fit for you or your loved one, I’ll be happy to assist you in finding someone who is.

My specialties include self-esteem, communication skills, relationship dynamics, managing stress, anxiety, and depression.
Guiding others to discover meaning and value in their experiences is something I take great pride in. We can often learn more about ourselves and I believe we can more effectively adjust to our unique circumstances through this discovery. It is critical to have an understanding of the beliefs we have of ourselves, others, and the world, as well as where these beliefs began and what purpose they serve. Through increased awareness, we can learn to navigate challenging thoughts, emotions, and sensations in the body with less of a challenge.

People often have an underlying issues they struggle with that affects many aspects of their life.
I work with clients to identify the core issues you struggle with and how you can deal with them to meet your goals. Sometimes, this has to do with dealing with other people and things around us. Other times, it is our own internal thoughts and struggles that get in the way.

My experience and expertise includes working with with anxiety, depression, unexplained physical symptoms, substance abuse/dependence, bipolar and mood disorders, issues of identity, eating and exercise disorders, grief & loss, perfor mance, motivation, PTSD, and chronic stress.
Personally, I know how difficult it was for me to get out of bed when suffering from depression and anxiety and to go about the everyday when concerned about having another panic attack. I know how valuable it was for me to have someone to talk to that wouldn't judge me or make me feel guilty about being exactly where I was at the time. The idea of "you should be fine", or "you have no reason to be anxious or depressed" is hurtful and doesn't help.

I am passionate about walking with, and supporting folks who, despite their successes, are confused by their lack of true joy or meaning in this life. So many of us wrestle with feeling deeply unfulfilled and real difficulty finding lasting and nourishing connection with others. Far too many of us then struggle privately, which rarely leads to less struggle. My mission is to create a space that feels safe and accepting where your individual struggle can be seen, accepted, understood, and worked out in a way that brings you a sense of peace.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
